Falkirk Secures Loan Signing of Lewis Neilson
Falkirk manager John McGlynn has confirmed the arrival of Lewis Neilson on a season-long loan deal from Hearts. The 22-year-old centre-back, who has previously been on loan at Falkirk, was described by McGlynn as a “long-time target” for the club.
Neilson’s journey to Falkirk includes a spell with St Johnstone during the second half of the previous season after an initial loan from Hearts. He made 22 appearances in the Scottish Premiership last term and has also had stints with Dundee United and Partick Thistle. His experience across different clubs has provided him with valuable exposure to top-flight football.
This is not Neilson’s first time playing for Falkirk. In 2021, he joined the club from Hearts on a short-term deal alongside Kai Fotheringham. During that period, he made ten appearances as Falkirk missed out on promotion and the title. Now, he returns to a club that is in a strong position, having secured back-to-back SPFL titles and preparing for their first top-flight campaign in 15 years.
McGlynn expressed his excitement about Neilson’s signing, highlighting the player’s qualities and potential impact on the team. “I’m delighted to get Lewis in. He’s a player we’ve had our eye on for some time, and he fits a lot of the credentials that we’re looking for,” McGlynn said. “He’s gained a lot of experience for a player so young at 22 years of age, coming through at Dundee United and then moving on to Hearts. His loan spells with Falkirk, Partick Thistle, and St Johnstone last season have given him a wealth of experience.”
The manager also praised Neilson’s development and his potential to strengthen the squad. “He’s played a lot of games, particularly in the Premiership. He’s got a lot of football in front of him, and he’s someone that I feel can make us better. It’s a good opportunity for him to continue his development. It’s great to have Lewis on board, and I look forward to working with him this season.”
McGlynn extended his gratitude to the staff at Hearts for facilitating the loan. “I would like to thank Derek McInnes, Graeme Jones, Andrew McKinley, and everyone at Heart of Midlothian FC for their assistance in making this loan happen.”
Neilson is set to make his debut for Falkirk in their final pre-season match against his former side, St Johnstone. The game will take place at McDiarmid Park tomorrow night. Following this, Falkirk will travel to face a Highland League outfit as they prepare for the competitive season, which will kick off with the Premier Sports Cup group stages.
