New Signings Bolster Hamilton Accies Women’s Squad for SWPL1 Return
Hamilton Accies Women’s manager Robert Watson is confident that the club’s recent signings will provide the necessary experience and quality to help the team thrive in the top flight this season. After securing promotion from SWPL2 last term, the squad is preparing for their return to SWPL1 with a crucial opening match against Partick Thistle on August 17.

Watson has made several strategic additions to the squad this summer, including Lucy Barclay, Sarah Gibb, and Shona Cowan. These players join Georgia Gray, who recently joined from Rangers and has shown great promise as a central defender and midfielder for Scotland’s under-19 team.
Key Additions and Their Impact
Lucy Barclay, a former Celtic midfielder, was one of the first targets for Watson. Although she was unavailable last season due to injury, her talent and experience at the youth level have long been recognized by the manager. “She has come through the youth pathway at Celtic and represented the national team at youth levels,” Watson said. “She is exactly the player we needed to increase the depth of quality in the squad.”
Sarah Gibb, another experienced midfielder, previously had a contract with Glasgow City before moving to Motherwell. While her time there did not go as planned, Watson believes her skills and determination make her a valuable addition. “She is a very good midfielder and we are excited to get her in,” he added.

Shona Cowan, a former Hearts defender, brings top-flight experience to the squad. She spent last season on loan at Partick Thistle and offers much-needed cover in the full-back position. “We only had two full-backs last season, so full-back cover was essential this season,” Watson explained. “Her experience in the top division is important.”
Preparing for the Challenge Ahead
As the team prepares for their SWPL1 opener against Partick Thistle, Watson acknowledges the challenge ahead. “Partick are a very good side, and we’ve got to be honest about it. We need to take something from them,” he said. With a 10-team league this season, every game is critical, and teams must focus on securing points against non-full-time sides.
Watson also highlighted the significance of the matchday atmosphere. “When we came up last time, we played Celtic on the opening day, and it gives you that sense of occasion playing one of the big guns. But Partick are a strong side, and we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
Looking Ahead
The new signings have already begun to make an impact, and Watson is optimistic about the team’s prospects this season. With a mix of experience, talent, and determination, Hamilton Accies Women are ready to compete at the highest level.
As the club continues to build its squad, fans can expect more exciting developments in the coming weeks. The focus now is on making a strong start in SWPL1 and proving that the team is ready to stand tall among the best in Scottish women’s football.
