Expect delays: Everett traffic to face jam during 14-week paving project

Major Paving Project Begins on I-5 in Everett

A significant paving project is set to begin on Interstate 5 (I-5) in Everett, Washington, starting Saturday, July 19. This large-scale initiative by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will involve repaving a section of the highway and is expected to last for 14 weeks. The work will primarily take place during evenings and overnight hours, but commuters may also encounter occasional daytime activity.

The project will initially focus on the southbound lanes of I-5 between 41st Street and 100th Street Southeast, near the Everett Mall. Contractors will start by closing up to four left lanes to begin the grinding process. These lane closures will occur from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 20, and then again from 7 p.m. on Sunday to 5 a.m. on Monday, July 21. After that, the closures will continue nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, July 25.

Once the southbound lanes are completed, the same section will be repaved in the northbound direction. WSDOT has provided a detailed schedule for the closures, which includes:

  • From 7 p.m. Saturday, July 19 to 9 a.m. Sunday, July 20.
  • From 7 p.m. Sunday, July 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 21.
  • From 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly Tuesday, July 22 to Friday morning, July 25.

Throughout the project, WSDOT will keep the public informed of any changes or updates. Motorists should be aware that some parts of the work require dry weather conditions and may need to be rescheduled if necessary.

Impact on Commuters and Traffic Patterns

The project will significantly affect traffic flow in the area. The Broadway HOV on-ramp to southbound I-5 will be closed during the roadwork, while the general purpose on-ramp from Broadway will remain open. Drivers should plan accordingly and consider alternative routes to avoid delays.

The pavement repair project will cover approximately 4 miles of southbound I-5 in Everett and is expected to be completed later this fall. During this time, drivers should exercise caution, especially motorcyclists, who should be mindful of grooved and uneven pavement surfaces.

Tips for Navigating the Construction Zone

To help commuters stay informed about road closures and traffic conditions, WSDOT encourages everyone to check their travel page and travel map regularly. These resources provide real-time updates on what roads are open or closed and can help drivers make informed decisions about their travel plans.

The project is part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure and ensure safer, more efficient travel for residents and visitors alike. While the construction may cause some inconvenience, it is essential for maintaining the quality and safety of one of the region’s most heavily used highways.

Drivers are urged to remain patient and vigilant during this period. By staying informed and planning ahead, commuters can minimize disruptions and navigate the area more smoothly during the 14-week project.
