A Magical Christmas Experience at Beaulieu
This year, Beaulieu is set to offer a brand-new festive experience that promises to enchant visitors of all ages. The event, titled In A Palace House Christmas, brings the rich and vibrant story of pantomime to life through a series of immersive theatrical installations. As guests wander through the stately rooms of the historic estate, they will be transported on a magical journey filled with soundscapes, multi-colour projections, and interactive elements.
Upon entering, visitors will be greeted by masked Harlequin mannequins, adding an air of mystery and tradition to the occasion. In the impressive Dining Hall, a midnight banquet has already been prepared, featuring sugary treats and jewel-themed glassware that evoke the spirit of a grand celebration. Just outside, a travelling cart overflows with props, costumes, and musical instruments, creating a visual feast in the Fountain Courtyard.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is the theatre set up around the magnificent fireplace in the Lower Drawing Room. This installation features artwork created by Lord Montagu’s mother, Belinda, Lady Montagu, blending art and storytelling in a unique way. Meanwhile, the Portrait Gallery comes alive with weird and wonderful panto animals, spanning from the traditional Mummers to the modern-day pantomime horse.
As visitors make their way up the grand staircase, they will encounter swags of lavish, colourful decorations. The upstairs dressing rooms offer a glimpse into the world behind the curtain, where feathers, floristry, and glamorous gowns fill the space, adding to the sense of theatrical magic.
In the newly opened private wing, Pierrot can be spotted sitting in a crescent moon at a window, while the Upper Drawing Room boasts a towering 14ft pantomime dame and a mirrored catwalk lined with principal boy mannequins. These striking displays are sure to leave a lasting impression on all who see them.
No Christmas at Beaulieu would be complete without a tree, and this year’s centrepiece is a stunning 20ft creation dressed in the Harlequin theme. The tree features shocking pink faux foliage, jewelled fruits, and gemstone-inspired decorations, making it a true showstopper.
The event, designed by renowned designers Charlotte Lloyd Webber and Adrian Lillie of CLW Event Design, runs from Saturday, November 29, until January 4, with daily access except on Christmas Day. Visitors will have the opportunity to be among the first to experience this festive spectacle, which celebrates the enduring legacy of pantomime.
Lord Montagu expressed his excitement about the event, stating: “Pantomime has become a part of Christmas at Palace House in recent years, and we are delighted that Charlotte Lloyd Webber and her team will be telling that story through the installations.”
