Drive EV Gh Launches First Electric Vehicle Showroom in Accra
Drive EV Gh, a local electric vehicle retailer, has unveiled its first electric vehicle showroom at Burma Hills in Accra. This initiative is aimed at promoting sustainable mobility and reducing the environmental impact of transportation in Ghana.
The showroom features a wide range of electric and hybrid vehicles, with prices ranging from US$21,000 to US$250,000. Among the models on display are notable names in the electric vehicle industry, such as the advanced BYD Yangwang U8 SUV. The showroom also offers vehicles that are currently on order, making it easier for customers to explore their options.
One of the key advantages of purchasing an electric vehicle through Drive EV Gh is the availability of flexible financing options. The company has partnered with several financial institutions that offer high-purchase deals for customers. These include zero deposit options with 15 percent interest over five years, making electric vehicles more accessible and affordable for a wider audience.
For salaried workers who bank with Ecobank Ghana or Fidelity Bank, there is an option to purchase an electric vehicle through hire purchase. This allows individuals to drive a paid-off electric vehicle after a five-year period, providing a structured and manageable payment plan.
At the opening of the showroom, Ashie Galloway, the CEO of Drive EV Gh, emphasized the importance of electric vehicles in creating a sustainable future. He stated that EVs not only offer a greener lifestyle but also significantly reduce costs compared to traditional fuel-powered cars. According to Galloway, the cost of using an electric vehicle is approximately 70 percent lower than that of a conventional car.
Galloway further highlighted the need for Ghanaians to embrace green mobility. He said, “There is only one world, and we must take care of it. Green mobility protects the air, saves the planet, and makes the world a better place for future generations.” He also noted that the growing interest in electric vehicles in Ghana is a positive sign for the industry.
In addition to the showroom, Drive EV Gh operates X-Charge EV GH, its sister company, which provides a charging network for electric vehicles in Ghana. Currently, there are about five charging points in Accra, with more planned along the Accra-Kumasi highway and in Kumasi itself.
Galloway, who also serves as CEO of X-Charge EV GH and Urban Plug Energy, a solar energy company, mentioned that they have signed agreements to install additional charging stations in key locations. His vision is to expand the charging infrastructure across the country, making electric vehicles more convenient for users.
While other countries offer incentives for switching to electric vehicles, such as subsidies and tax credits, the situation in Ghana is different. The government has taken some steps by waiving import duties on electric vehicles designated for public transportation for eight years. Additionally, there are tax breaks for component manufacturers and financial support for charging infrastructure development.
However, Galloway believes that more needs to be done to encourage the adoption of personal electric vehicles. He is calling on the government to introduce comprehensive tax incentives and support purchase plans. He argues that electric vehicles are more affordable and sustainable in the long run, and that Ghana should follow the example set by other nations.
Drive EV Gh is actively working with advocacy groups to push for policy changes that will make electric vehicles more attractive to consumers. The company is committed to playing a leading role in shaping a sustainable future for Ghana, combining efforts in mobility, renewable energy, and charging infrastructure.
