Entertainment Hub Set to Revitalize Lake Crabtree Area

Potential New Entertainment Hub Near Lake Crabtree

A significant opportunity is emerging near Lake Crabtree, with over 130 acres of land being considered for development into the Triangle’s next major entertainment center. This initiative has sparked a mix of excitement and concern among local residents and stakeholders.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) has acknowledged the current recreational uses of the land but emphasized that there is a strategic purpose behind this project. The proposed complex could feature a variety of attractions, including a lazy river, food and beverage options, lodging facilities, event spaces, an ice-skating rink, and even a rock-climbing wall. These elements are designed to create a vibrant destination that caters to families, tourists, and locals alike.

Savannah Martinez, who recently moved to Morrisville from Texas, is enthusiastic about the potential developments. She believes the new entertainment center would be a valuable addition for her 3-year-old son. “We probably live five minutes from here, so it’s very convenient,” she said, highlighting the proximity and potential benefits for young families in the area.

Brandon Munn, who enjoys canoeing on Lake Crabtree, expressed interest in the project as well. Although he doesn’t often visit this part of the Triangle, he would consider making it a destination if the outdoor entertainment complex is built. “As long as it’s, like, somewhat affordable, I think it’s a good idea,” he added, showing his openness to the concept.

However, not everyone is convinced. Matthew Hurley prefers that the land remain as it is, emphasizing its value for outdoor activities. He mentioned that he and his family enjoy mountain biking and have heard concerns about potential changes to existing trails. “I have heard that there’s mountain bike trails that maybe are getting erased,” he shared, reflecting the sentiments of some community members.

The airport owns the property and is collaborating with Tom Dundon’s development company, which also owns the Carolina Hurricanes. This partnership aims to transform the space into a dynamic entertainment hub. Despite efforts to reach out to the Dallas-based company for comment, no response has been received yet.

RDU has stated that this project is part of a broader strategy to generate revenue amid continued growth. The airport recently achieved a milestone by adding its 80th nonstop flight, marking a significant step forward. Passenger traffic in June saw more than 1.4 million travelers, representing a nearly 3% increase from the previous month.

“The Airport Authority is required to generate its own income to develop and operate RDU,” the airport explained. “Income from projects like this will help fund critical improvements like a new runway, an expanded terminal, and an improved roadway system at RDU.”

To ensure transparency and community involvement, a series of public workshops will be held to gather input on the proposal. The first workshop is scheduled for August 19, providing an opportunity for residents to voice their opinions and concerns.

As the plans progress, the future of Lake Crabtree remains a topic of discussion among locals, developers, and officials. The balance between development and preserving natural spaces will be crucial in shaping the final outcome of this ambitious project.
