HBO Max has emerged as a major player, earning a record-breaking 142 nominations. This achievement marks a new high for the network, surpassing its previous best of 140 nods in 2020. The success is driven by several standout series, including the drama “The Penguin,” “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us,” and the comedy “Hacks.” These shows have collectively captured the attention of Emmy voters and showcased the network’s strong presence in both dramatic and comedic categories.

In comparison, Netflix remains the all-time leader in Emmy nominations, having secured 160 nods in 2020. However, this year, the streaming giant has managed to secure 120 nominations, placing it second among platforms. This represents an increase from the 107 nominations it received last year, indicating continued growth and momentum.

One of the most notable surprises this year is the performance of HBO’s limited series “The Penguin,” which received 24 nominations—outperforming expectations. This number places it just behind Apple TV+’s “Severance,” which claimed the top spot with 27 nominations.

“The White Lotus,” a returning drama series that has consistently drawn Emmy attention since its debut, earned 23 nominations. Meanwhile, “The Last of Us,” based on the popular video game and starring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, received 16 nods.

On the comedy front, “Hacks” continues to dominate, securing 14 nominations. It ranks as the second most-nominated comedy, trailing only Apple TV+’s “The Studio,” which received 23 nominations. This highlights the competitive nature of the comedy category and the strength of Apple TV+ in recent years.

HBO Max faced some challenges in 2024 due to the Hollywood strike, resulting in a drop in nominations to 91. However, the network remains a powerhouse in the television landscape, with its diverse lineup of shows continuing to attract critical acclaim.

Apple TV+ had a standout year, achieving 79 nominations. This is particularly impressive given that the platform has only been in operation for about six years. The success is largely attributed to the drama series “Severance,” which led the field with 27 nominations. Other notable performances include “Shrinking,” which received 7 nods.

Walt Disney Co. platforms also made a significant impact, earning a total of 136 nominations. Hulu and FX combined for 95 nominations, with FX’s comedy “The Bear” leading the way with 13 nods. While FX saw a decline compared to the previous year—when “Shogun” dominated with 25 nominations—it still maintained a strong presence.

Disney+ added another 40 nominations to its tally, driven by the second season of the Star Wars drama “Andor,” which received 14 nods. This further cements Disney’s dominance across multiple platforms and genres.

As the Emmy Awards approach, the competition promises to be fierce. With so many high-profile shows receiving recognition, the race for the coveted awards will be highly anticipated by fans and industry insiders alike.
