Embrace Farming and AI for a Secure Future, Says Plateau Commissioner

The head of Youth and Sports Development in Plateau State, Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, has urged young people to adopt agriculture and artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure their future.

Ashoms announced the decision on Tuesday at the 2025 International Youth Day event in Jos, which had the theme “Local Youth Initiatives for the SDGs and Beyond.”

The Commissioner emphasized the significance of youth-driven projects in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He observed that agricultural cooperatives led by young people are increasing food output and employment across all 17 local government areas in the state, mentioning that young peace promoters are also stopping conflicts through discussions, while youth are making progress in business, mental health, environmental protection, and gender equality.

“In all 17 Local Government Areas of Plateau state, youth-driven agricultural cooperatives are enhancing food output and employment opportunities. Young individuals promoting peace are preventing conflicts through discussion. In schools and communities alike, youth are making progress in business, mental health, environmental protection, and gender equality. These initiatives reflect the resilience and creativity of the Plateau people,” Ashoms said.

The commissioner also pointed out the promise of AI in fostering innovation and ensuring the future of young people, and underlined the government’s initiatives to promote youth growth via agriculture and technology.

“The Plateau Youth Agricultural Empowerment Program (P-YAEP) provides hundreds of young people with the skills needed for sustainable agribusiness, in line with SDGs such as eradicating hunger and encouraging fair employment. The role of agriculture and AI in fostering innovation and ensuring the future of youth is undeniable, which is why we need to adopt them today,” the commissioner said.

Ashoms emphasized again the importance of cooperation and structural assistance to maintain programs aimed at empowering young people. “Progress requires teamwork. Governments need to create opportunities, schools should focus on teaching critical thinking, companies must work together, and young people must provide answers,” he stated.

The Governor’s Special Advisor on Youth Development, Hitler Pwajok, stated that the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang has kept its commitment to include young people in the governance process.

The administration has achieved notable progress in engaging young individuals in decision-making processes, with 60% of positions and elected roles reserved for youth.

“The government has launched agricultural development programs, such as the Back-to-Farm initiative, designed to involve 15,000 to 20,000 young people in farming and agro-industrial sectors. The goal is to develop 2,500 hectares of land by next year and 3,500 hectares by 2027,” he added.
