Elon Musk’s New Political Venture and the Strain with Donald Trump
Elon Musk, the world’s richest person with a net worth of $405 billion according to Forbes, has made headlines with his recent announcement of forming a new political party. This move comes amid his strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s signature legislation, which he criticizes as a major contributor to the country’s financial instability.
Musk took to his social media platform X on July 5 to announce the formation of the America Party, stating, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy.” He emphasized that the party aims to restore freedom to the American people.

The decision to form a new political party follows a growing rift between Musk and Trump over the spending levels in the president’s mega-bill. Musk has been vocal in his criticism of the legislation, which includes tax cuts, increased spending on immigration enforcement and the military, and deep cuts to Medicaid. He also attempted to rally opposition to the bill among Republicans in Congress and called for a new political party in response.
Trump signed the bill into law on July 4, despite Musk’s efforts to oppose it. The legislation, referred to by Trump as the “big beautiful bill,” is projected to add $3.4 trillion to the national debt over a decade and includes a $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
Musk has strongly criticized the bill’s impact on the national debt and has threatened to support primary challengers against those who supported the bill. His comments were particularly pointed, as the bill was backed by all but two Republicans in the House and three in the Senate. Musk wrote, “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!”
Before Trump signed the legislation, Musk had already taken steps to repair his strained relationship with the president. This included personally apologizing for insults he made during his combative exit from the Trump administration last month. However, tensions have resurfaced as Musk continues to voice his concerns about the bill.

In addition to his political activities, Musk has also been involved in various other endeavors. He spent nearly $290 million to help Trump and other Republicans get elected and led efforts to slash federal agencies through the Department of Government Efficiency in the early months of Trump’s presidency.
Musk recently polled his followers on his social media platform X regarding the idea of a new political party. On Independence Day, he posed the question, “Is this the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system?” The poll results showed a 2-1 favorability, leading Musk to declare, “You want a new political party and you shall have it!”
The new party might focus on a limited number of races, Musk suggested. He proposed targeting just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts, emphasizing that these could be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring they reflect the true will of the people.
Despite his political ambitions, Musk has also indicated a shift in focus. After spending millions to influence a Wisconsin state Supreme Court race, he suggested he would cease his political spending as he returns his attention to Tesla and SpaceX.
Musk’s recent actions highlight a complex interplay of political activism and business interests. While his new political venture signals a significant shift, it also underscores the ongoing challenges of navigating the intersection of corporate power and public policy.
