El Paso Sheriff Boosts Red Sands Patrols for July 4th Safety

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is taking steps to ensure a safer environment amid the 4th of July festivities.

Sheriff Oscar Ugarte announced that deputies will be patrolling the Red Sands area in four-by-four vehicles to manage the risks associated with the holiday tradition of fireworks and four-wheeling.

“There is ATVs… four by four vehicles traveling in all directions at high rate of speeds. And unfortunately, a lot of these people that are out there are also consuming alcohol. So there is a lot of danger out there,” said Ugarte.

Local residents expressed support for the increased law enforcement presence.

Rafael Morales said, “Cops presence out there. It’s great. I I’m in favor of it.”

Similarly, Noah Nunez and Pablo Gonzalez agreed, stating, “Yeah, I think it’s good to keep them more safe.”

Richard Garcia, who operates a local fireworks store, echoed these sentiments. “I think that’s great. It’s more protection and safety for everyone out there,” he said.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging attendees to plan ahead if they intend to consume alcohol. “And also, if you are caught driving an ATV vehicle under the influence, you will be going to jail,” warned Ugarte.

Rafael Morales emphasized the importance of courtesy and safety, saying, “It’s a good idea because there’s been a lot of accidents out there. Red Sands. And actually it’s the courtesy of all the other drivers. Hey, you know, it’s like driving, you know, give ’em the courtesy and make sure you don’t drink. You don’t drive.”

With the added patrols, the Sheriff’s Office aims to reduce accidents and ensure a safe celebration for all.
