Edo Schools Launch STEAM Labs

Enhancing Education Through STEAM Laboratories in Edo State

In a significant move to promote quality education, the NEPL/Seplat Energy Joint Venture has taken a step forward by commissioning three Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) laboratories in three public schools located in Edo State. This initiative marks a milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance educational infrastructure and provide students with modern learning tools.

The schools that have benefited from this initiative include Niger College, Army Day Secondary School, and Oba Akenzua Secondary School. With these new additions, the total number of STEAM laboratories established by NEPL/Seplat for public schools now stands at six. This expansion underscores the commitment of the joint venture to support educational development across the region.

During the handover ceremony, Chioma Afe, Seplat’s director for external affairs and social performance, emphasized the importance of the STEAM approach in shaping the future of students. She stated that these laboratories are designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovative skills among students, preparing them for the challenges of the 21st century. The STEAM methodology encourages a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to learning, allowing students to explore the connections between different subjects and ignite their curiosity and creativity.

The newly equipped laboratories feature state-of-the-art educational tools such as computer systems, internet access, and subject-specific materials. These resources aim to revolutionize the way Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics are taught in secondary schools, providing students with a more interactive and engaging learning experience.

Governor Okpebholo, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, expressed his appreciation for the investment made by Seplat and NEPL in securing a better future for Edo people through education. He urged students and school authorities to make the most of the equipment and to safeguard it carefully. He also highlighted the laboratories as a testament to the strategic partnership between Seplat and the state government in ensuring that every Edo child has access to quality education.

Paul Omenogor, deputy manager for sustainability at NEPL, encouraged students, school authorities, and the host community to maximize the use of the facilities while also protecting them. His remarks aimed to ensure that these resources are utilized effectively and that they continue to serve the educational needs of the students.

Andrew Ijegbai, Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Oil and Gas, commended the joint venture for its support and investment in quality education for the citizens. His comments reflected the broader recognition of the positive impact that such initiatives have on the community.

The principals of the beneficiary schools—Godwin Idemudia, Osemwenkhae Ezeilekhae, and Ipogah Michael—pledged to ensure the effective use and sustainability of the laboratories. They described the facilities as a game-changer for both students and teachers, highlighting the potential for improved educational outcomes and enhanced learning opportunities.
