EDITORIAL: Safeguard Kenyan Jobs for Local Youth

Kenya is facing a significant challenge due to high youth unemployment rates.

Given that more than 70 percent of the population is under 35 years old, the nation confronts a significant youth demographic that requires immediate and thoughtful policy actions.

Nevertheless, as countless young Kenyans face difficulties finding employment, an increasing number of unqualified foreigners—primarily from India, China, and nearby East African nations—are securing temporary positions like construction work (mjengo), street vending, and retailing secondhand clothing and footwear known locally as mitumba.

Nations across the globe safeguard their job markets to guarantee that their residents have priority access to employment, particularly in lower-skilled industries. Kenya should follow this example.

Permitting unrestricted access for unqualified workers not only disadvantages native job hunters but also drives down salaries and stokes societal discontent.

It is essential to distinguish clearly between the necessity for highly skilled foreign experts, who facilitate technology transfer and boost economic development, and the surge of low-skilled laborers competing directly with unemployed local citizens.

Stricter immigration policies and enhanced enforcement measures should be implemented to guarantee that work permits are issued exclusively to people possessing exceptional or critical abilities.

Young Kenyans are diligent and enthusiastic about participating in the country’s development. Instead of facing uneven competition, what they require is an equitable environment.

Safeguarding their ability to work goes beyond mere economic strategy; it is essential for maintaining national pride and ensuring long-lasting stability.

Quote of the day: “Doing what is right never involves any deceit; it is always straightforward and clear.” On May 26, 1924, U.S. President Calvin Coolidge signed an immigration law that restricted entry into the country.
