Ebonyi: Nwifuru Boosts Health Workforce by Hiring 600, Launches Three Oxygen Plants

The Ebonyi State government reports that it has hired at least 600 doctors, nurses, and additional staff members for the state’s healthcare sector.

Dr. Moses Ekuma, the State Commissioner for Health, disclosed this information in Abakaliki, which is the state’s capital city.

As stated by the commissioner, recruiting doctors with competitive salaries aims to motivate them to perform their responsibilities efficiently. This approach has been instrumental in addressing critical medical situations across healthcare centers in the state located in Southeastern Nigeria.

Ekuma also pointed out that the state government, in collaboration with UNICEF, acquired and set up oxygen plants located across different areas within the three senatorial districts of the state, including its headquarters.

“We were also taking steps to enhance the quality of healthcare for our residents.”

When we arrived onboard, we found out that our medical staff were obtaining oxygen supplies from Port Harcourt in Rivers State. After discussing this matter with UNICEF, the request was granted.

“We have facilities located at the Alex-Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki, which is the state capital; Owutu-Edda General Hospital in the Edda Local Government Area; and Onueke General Hospital in Ezza-South Local Government Area,” he stated.

Ekuma mentioned that during those two years, the state government acquired several ambulances and launched an emergency ambulance service.

The ambulance emergency service was deemed essential for assisting pregnant women during labor as well as handling various other emergencies such as dog or snake bites.

“The victims can obtain emergency medical assistance at no cost within 48 hours,” he stated additionally.

Regarding staffing, Ekuma mentioned that more than 600 healthcare professionals were added to the state’s health workforce, encompassing roles such as physicians, nurses, and midwives.

Not only do we hire them, but we have also enhanced their stipends; they were granted vehicles and pleasant lodgings to ensure they continue working with us, the state government.

This measure aims to discourage doctors from seeking better opportunities elsewhere. To achieve this, the Governor provided SUVs to the medical staff and set a minimum salary of N500,000 per month.

All healthcare centers have been improved as the Governor aims to provide only the best for his constituents. There’s a facility dedicated to training midwives, with more than 100 of them having benefitted from this program.

“The Governor truly has the interests of his people at heart,” said the Commissioner.
