Eagles’ Training Camp: Philly’s Secret Weapon Takes On Offense With Running Back Drills

EaglesFormer linebacker Ben VanSumeren could have a larger part on offense in 2025. When the Eagles began training camp on Wednesday, VanSumeren took practice snaps as a running back with the third-team offense.

VanSumeren, now wearing jersey number 43, was on the field for 22 plays as a fullback last season before sustaining a season-ending injury during a Friday practice. The Eagles are eager to involve him in more plays and will give him that chance this summer.

“They mentioned that the last time we had an All-Pro fullback here was Leonard Weaver, who wore number 43,” VanSumeren said.Inside The Birds“So, they wanted me to put on 43.

VanSumeren showcased exceptional athletic statistics during Michigan State’s Pro Day prior to entering the league, recording times ranging from 4.36 to 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash and achieving a 42.5-inch vertical jump. General Manager Howie Roseman, who brought VanSumeren back on a one-year contract in March, feels these traits are too significant to ignore.

I mentioned that my main goal is to assist the team,” VanSumeren stated. “That’s my top priority. I also want to be recognized as the best in a specific area. I’m going to trust the judgment of people like Howie [Roseman] and others in the front office who assess talent; they observe me play every single day. I told them, ‘I’ll do whatever you ask, but know that I aim to be at the top of my game and be considered the best at what I do. So, tell me where you see that happening.’ They believe I can achieve that as a fullback.
