A Day of Remembrance and Community Spirit
The Iveragh Vintage Club marked a deeply emotional day on Sunday as its members and the wider community gathered to honor the memory of Myles O’Sullivan, the club’s former chairman. His passing earlier this year, following a tragic brain haemorrhage while attending his uncle’s funeral, left a void in both the club and the local community. Myles was a beloved figure, known for his dedication to the area and his unwavering commitment to the club’s activities.
This year’s event was particularly significant, as it was the first without him. However, it also served as a tribute to his legacy. Before his death, Myles and the club had decided to support St Anne’s Community Hospital in Cahersiveen, which had been a place of care during his final days. His wife, Brenda, made it her mission to ensure that the event raised as much money as possible for the hospital, and she succeeded beyond expectations. More than €21,000 has already been raised, with additional funds still coming in.
The community came together to make this year’s field day one of the most successful yet. The event featured a stunning display of vintage machinery, drawing large crowds who were captivated by the nostalgic exhibits. Local businesses played a key role in the success of the day, with Centra shops providing a variety of treats and local members of the ICA contributing to the food offerings. Volunteers helped sell the produce, further boosting the fundraising efforts.

In addition to the fundraising, the event provided entertainment for children, ensuring that families could enjoy the day together. Myles’ cousin, Eileen O’Connor, added a musical touch to the occasion, bringing a personal connection to the celebration. The day also included moments of reflection, as the club remembered two other long-time members: Christopher O’Connor from Dromid and Milltown, and Eddie Quinlan. Their contributions to the club were acknowledged, highlighting the strong sense of camaraderie among members.
A special recognition was also given to Shane Lyne, who is retiring from the club after years of dedicated service. His efforts over the years have been instrumental in organizing and executing events, and the club presented him with a plaque to mark his contributions.
Brenda O’Sullivan expressed her heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in making the event a success. “We blew it out of the water with more than €21k now raised and money is still coming in,” she said. Her words reflected the deep gratitude felt by the family and the community for the overwhelming support shown during the event.
The Iveragh Vintage Club continues to be a vital part of the local community, bringing people together through shared interests and traditions. This year’s event not only honored the memory of Myles O’Sullivan but also showcased the strength and unity of the people of Iveragh.
