Dylan Harper’s Summer League Journey and the Influence of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Dylan Harper, the San Antonio Spurs’ rookie selected second in the 2025 NBA Draft, made a strong impression during his two performances at the NBA Summer League. His debut was so impressive that it prompted a reporter to draw a comparison to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning NBA and Finals MVP.
When asked if he felt his game resembled SGA’s, Harper responded with a mix of surprise and admiration. “That’s a new one,” he said. “That’s definitely someone I watch. His pace, how he gets to the rim, stuff like that. Just how poised he always is, that’s definitely someone I watch.”
Harper’s style of play, particularly his ability to move with confidence and purpose while attacking the basket, has drawn comparisons to the Oklahoma City Thunder star. This similarity in approach is something Harper acknowledges and respects. “Just trying to make the right plays,” he admitted. “No matter if it shows up on the stat sheet or not, I’m just gonna go out there and make the right play, just make what’s best for the team. So, efficiency-wise, I could’ve done better, but I think (I did) well.”

During one of his games, Harper scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds against Cooper Flagg, the top overall draft pick this summer. The game also featured a highlight-reel block, where Harper leaped high to reject an opponent. Despite the impressive play, Harper downplayed any intention to send a message. “Not at all. I was just happy to play basketball,” he said. “I mean, I get to play basketball for a living now, so I was probably smiling the whole game just happy to be out there.”
Harper emphasized the importance of defense in his development. “If you don’t play defense, you’re not going to get time on the court, so just trying my best. It’s learning new stuff, how to get over screens, guard the ball, stuff like that is definitely an area I look to grow and just keep on getting better at.”
This game marked Harper’s first competitive action since the Rutgers Scarlett Knights lost in the conference tournament in mid-March. The experience in Las Vegas was further enhanced by the presence of San Antonio players, including superstar Victor Wembanyama, who were in attendance to support the Summer Spurs.
“Having the guys’ support, come here and overall just be cheerleaders, just helping us out and talking to us during the game was definitely great,” Harper said.
In his second game, Harper faced the Utah Jazz, who drafted his college teammate and fellow lottery pick, Ace Bailey. “It’s gonna be a lot different, just ’cause I was his teammate for a year. Just playing against him will feel weird, but, definitely looking forward to it,” Harper said before the matchup.
Harper had previously seen Bailey in Las Vegas, both at the event and as a supporter of the team. “It means the world just to see your best friend,” he said.
Bailey missed the thrilling 93-91 Spurs win at the buzzer, but Harper still managed to contribute, scoring 16 points again and hitting key shots in a tight game. His performance echoed the kind of clutch play that fans have come to expect from NBA stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
As Harper continues to develop, his focus remains on making the right plays for the team and improving his skills on both ends of the court. With the support of his teammates and the guidance of experienced players, Harper is well on his way to making a lasting impact in the NBA.
