Doctor Who fans went into meltdown as
Billie Piper
executed a dramatic comeback to the
BBC
show to replace departing
Ncuti Gatwa
like the Time Lord in the concluding episode of Saturday’s series.
Billie, 42, first starred as the companion to the ninth Doctor in 2005, playing Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston’s Time Lord. She went onto star alongside David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor in the second series.
Nevertheless, die-hard Whovians weren’t anticipating the major plot twist at the conclusion of series 15 when Ncuti’s character regenerated into Rose following his exit after only two series. This shift came amidst controversial narratives that led to declining viewership numbers for the long-standing favorite show.

‘I WAS ACTUALLY STUNNED. I NEVER IMAGINED THAT THE PHRASE “BILLIE PIPER IS THE 16TH DOCTOR” WOULD LEAVE MY LIPS.’
‘#DoctorWho simply blew me away! Absolutely left me without words! Thrilled I decided to watch it at the theater. The audience was thrilled! Bursting into cheers, clapping, and exclamations of surprise! It was brilliant!’
‘Hold up, hold up, hold up, is Billie Piper the new Doctor, did my eyes trick me, have I traveled back in time, what’s happening, do we need to wait till Christmas to know what happens next, omgosh.’
‘BILLIE PIPER IS THE 16TH TIME LORD AND I CAN’T STOP YELLING CRYING OR VOMITING.’
Billie will now become the second female to assume the role of the Time Lord after
Jodie Whittaker
portrayed the 13th doctor.
She takes over from Ncuti, who departs from Doctor Who after two seasons in the sci-fi show.
The actor’s stint on the lengthy sci-fi series concluded with “The Reality War” episode wrapping up the season on Saturday.
In the two-part season finale, the Doctor confronted the Rani in a struggle to protect the planet after choosing to spare the life of a single young girl.
As he bade goodbye to his co-star Belinda Chandra, portrayed by Varada Sethu, he remarked, “I hope our paths cross again, but not under these circumstances.”
The finale also saw Whittaker, the 13th doctor, make a guest appearance as Gatwa’s Doctor appeared to be travelling through alternate universes.
In a statement released by the BBC, Ncuti Gatwa said: ‘You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it.
This adventure is etched in my memory, and the character will remain with me always. It’s indescribable to convey the feeling of being chosen for the role of the Doctor, just as it’s hard to put into words what it means to be embraced by such an enduring legacy—one cherished worldwide after more than six decades.
The fans genuinely serve as the ultimate character and life force of this series, and I am unable to express my gratitude sufficiently to both the Whoniverse and its devoted Whovians for embracing me and rendering this an incredibly moving journey.
I’ve cherished every moment of it, but now is the time to pass the keys to that treasured blue box and allow another person to assume control and relish it just as much as I have.
‘I’ll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.’
In response to the announcement, Billie stated, “There’s no denying my affection for this series; I’ve often mentioned that returning to the Whoniverse would be a dream come true since it holds many of my fondest recollections. Thus, being offered another chance to climb aboard that TARDIS was an invitation I simply couldn’t turn down.”
Following the airing of “Doctor Who,” Billie Piper shared on Instagram, “‘A rose is a rose is a rose!!!'” along with pictures from her past role as the Doctor’s companion, Rose Tyler.
Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said: ‘What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! ‘As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti’s great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights.’
