Disaster Unemployment Assistance Available for Kerr County Residents

Residents of Kerr County, including workers and self-employed individuals, who have been unable to work due to damage caused by recent flooding in the Hill Country may now be eligible for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits. This program is designed to provide financial support to those affected by natural disasters, helping them recover and regain stability.

Governor Abbott has emphasized the ongoing efforts of Texas officials to assist communities impacted by the flooding. He stated, “We are working tirelessly to support local officials in search and rescue and recovery operations. Texans who have been hit hardest by these devastating floods deserve the resources they need to move forward.” As part of this effort, residents in Kerr County can now apply for DUA benefits.

How to Apply for DUA Benefits

Individuals affected by the flooding in the designated area can apply for DUA benefits through several channels. Applications can be submitted online via the Unemployment Benefit Services website or by calling the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) at (800) 939-6631 between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. It is important to note that applications must be submitted by September 4, 2025, to be considered under this specific disaster declaration.

When applying, individuals should clearly state that their application is related to the damage caused by the Hill Country flooding. Additionally, more counties could be added to the disaster declaration in the future, expanding the eligibility criteria for DUA benefits.

Eligibility Criteria for DUA Benefits

Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available to individuals who meet specific criteria, including:

  • Have applied for and used all regular unemployment benefits, or do not qualify for unemployment benefits;
  • Worked or were self-employed or were scheduled to begin work or self-employment in the disaster area;
  • Can no longer work or perform services because of physical damage or destruction to the place of employment as a direct result of the disaster;
  • Establish that the work or self-employment they can no longer perform was their primary source of income;
  • Cannot perform work or self-employment because of an injury as a direct result of the disaster;
  • Became the breadwinner or major support of a household because of the death of the head of household; or
  • Were unable to reach their job or self-employment location because they must travel through the affected area and are prevented from doing so by the disaster.

Required Documentation for DUA Benefits

To receive DUA benefits, all required documentation must be submitted within 21 days from the day the DUA application is filed. The necessary documents include a Social Security number and proof of employment or self-employment at the time of the disaster. This includes evidence that the individual was working or scheduled to start work in the affected area and could not do so due to the flooding.

The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) requires proof of employment to verify eligibility. If individuals fail to submit this documentation by the 21-day deadline, TWC will stop DUA payments, and recipients may be required to repay any benefits received. In some cases, TWC can use existing records, such as wage data, to confirm employment status during the disaster period.

Support for Affected Individuals

For those seeking assistance, it is crucial to act promptly and ensure all required information is submitted accurately. The availability of DUA benefits provides a vital lifeline for individuals and families affected by the flooding, helping them navigate the challenges of recovery and rebuild their lives. By understanding the eligibility requirements and following the proper application process, residents can access the support they need during this difficult time.
