Honoring Korean War Veterans: Digital Memorial Stones at Yonsei University
A new initiative has been launched to honor the sacrifices of Korean War veterans, with digital memorial stones now installed at Yonsei University in Seoul. The unveiling ceremony for the digital memorial stones is scheduled to take place at Yonsei University’s library on Wednesday. Attendees will include Veterans Minister Kang Jung-ai, Yonsei President Yoon Dong-Sup, Korean War veterans, and other distinguished guests. This event marks a significant milestone as Yonsei becomes the first university to host such an installation under the ministry’s initiative.
The digital memorial stones are designed to illuminate the names of graduates who served during the Korean War. Specifically, the installation features the names of 1,363 alumni who participated in the conflict. Among them is Hyun Bong-hak, who played a crucial role in evacuating tens of thousands of war refugees to safety.
Each digital plaque includes a QR code that provides detailed information about the veterans. This information includes their military ranks, service periods, and the years they enrolled at Yonsei University. Minister Kang expressed her appreciation for the significance of this initiative. “It is meaningful that the memorial stone installation honoring national heroes (at Yonsei) is the first of its kind among the universities that sent students to the Korean War,” she stated. The Ministry of Veterans Affairs has ambitious plans to expand the project beyond Yonsei University.
