In 2020, Malena became part of the zoo’s large feline group when she was 10 years old. Just one year after her arrival, she created history as the first Amur tiger in North America to successfully have a complete hip replacement surgery, marking a significant achievement in the field of veterinary care.
Her caregivers lovingly remembered her daily ritual: she would greet the team with snorts and her characteristic ‘song.’
One of the things Malena’s animal care team will cherish most from their time with her is the daily welcome they received through her ‘songs’ and chuffs every morning, along with her fondness for her bedding.
They remembered that she wasn’t really a ‘morning person,’ the statement went on to say.
The absence of Malena resonates profoundly among our team members, volunteers, and numerous visitors touched by her subtle elegance and charm. Her presence has indelibly etched itself into the hearts of those fortunate enough to have witnessed it.
Following the announcement of her death, tributes flooded social media platforms—with approximately 600 messages expressing thanks, sorrow, and cherished recollections.
‘I am immensely thankful that during our latest visit, we had the chance to see her playing fetch with herself and her ball. She was incredibly lively. Warm hugs to her caregivers and everyone who cherished her,’ a commenter shared.
“Thank you, Brookfield Zoo Chicago, for providing excellent care and for making the humane decision for her. My warmest regards go out to all her caretakers, Whirl, and everyone who was concerned about her,” stated one person.
The sorrow was intensely personal for numerous individuals: ‘Deeply regretful. Our condolences go out to her caretakers as losing a cherished ‘family’ member is extremely difficult. She will be sorely missed by everyone.’
A guest recounted a special memory: “This photo was taken on November 30, 2020. It was right after discussing how Malena is incredibly reserved.”
A moment later, she peered around the rock and vanished just as swiftly. I felt incredibly thrilled!
The caretaker hurried back to view the image. She was eager to share with the others that she had tried to emerge.
Others expressed the sadness poetically: ” Heaven has ample room for tigers.”
As someone who used to work as a caretaker at Brookfield, I understand the powerful connection that can form with every animal under our watch. These creatures rely on us just as much as we do on them, so losing an individual from an endangered species feels even more devastating. My thoughts go out to everyone who cared for her.
Another user penned, “My daughter had a special place in her heart for two creatures: Malena and Kinda. This upcoming weekend is going to be quite challenging.”
A single tribute encapsulated everyone’s feelings: ‘My heart is broken. It was an honor just to be around her.’
As quoted from Pirates of the Caribbean, an attendee remarked, “The world remains unchanged… only with less in it.”
