Delta Flight Avoids Near-Collision with Aeroméxico During Takeoff in Mexico City
Authorities are currently investigating a close call involving a Delta Air Lines flight and an Aeroméxico aircraft during takeoff at an airport in Mexico City. The incident occurred on Monday, July 21, when the Delta flight was preparing for a scheduled departure to Atlanta. According to a statement from Delta, the crew noticed another aircraft landing on the same runway just as they were about to begin their takeoff.
The Delta flight, designated as Flight 590, had been set to depart at 7 a.m. When the crew observed the Aeroméxico plane landing in front of them, they immediately halted the takeoff process and returned to the gate. This quick decision by the flight crew helped prevent what could have been a serious aviation incident.
After refueling and consulting with Delta’s safety and flight operations teams, the aircraft was able to re-depart at 9:42 a.m. The flight eventually arrived in Atlanta at 3:20 p.m. local time. Delta has since reported the incident to the relevant aviation authorities in both Mexico and the United States, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Delta emphasized its commitment to passenger and employee safety, stating that the actions taken by the flight crew were in line with the airline’s rigorous training protocols. A spokesperson for the airline said, “Because nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, Delta will fully cooperate with authorities as the circumstances around this flight are investigated. We appreciate the flight crew’s actions to maintain situational awareness and act quickly – part of Delta’s extensive training.”
This incident comes amid ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Mexican governments regarding air travel policies. Recently, the Trump administration introduced new restrictions on flights from Mexico and threatened to end a long-standing partnership between Delta and Aeroméxico. These measures were a response to previous limitations placed on passenger and cargo flights by the Mexican government.
Despite these challenges, both airlines continue to operate under existing agreements, and the recent near-collision highlights the importance of strict adherence to safety protocols in aviation. As the investigation into the incident continues, it remains to be seen whether any regulatory changes or policy adjustments will result from this event.
