Delta LG Chair Kickstarts Health Walk to Celebrate Democracy Day

The Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, Bright Abeke, on Thursday, led residents, political leaders, and community members on a health walk around the metropolis.

The health walk was part of the activities to mark the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.

The event, which began at the Sapele Township Stadium, saw hundreds of enthusiastic participants walk through major roads of Sapele, in a display of unity and civic responsibility.

The route of the health walk took the participants through Ajogodo Road, continued to Okpe Road, and paused briefly at Okpe Grammar School, Amukpe, where the chairman addressed participants.

The walk eventually rounded up at the Sapele Local Government Secretariat.

The participants turned out in impressive numbers, with most of them wearing coordinated jerseys bearing messages of unity and fitness.

They waved mini-Nigerian flags and chanted songs of unity throughout the procession.

Addressing the gathering, the chairman stressed the importance of physical fitness and civic responsibility.

He said, “Today is not just Democracy Day; it is a day to recommit ourselves to the health of our communities and the unity of our nation.

“We are walking in support of our performing governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and our President, Bola Tinubu, whose leadership continues to chart a new path for development.

“Democracy is not just about elections. It is about the well-being of the people.

“We are using this health walk to promote wellness, community engagement, and support for leaders who are driving progress both at the state and national levels,” he said.

The Secretary to the Local Government Council, Overah Raymond, lauded the initiative as timely and unifying.

“We are proud of what the chairman is doing. This is not just a walk—it’s a message of peace, progress, and public health,” he said.

Another participant, Mrs Ejiro Edewor, a teacher and youth advocate, said the health walk reflected a shift in civic celebrations towards inclusivity and well-being.

“This is the first time I’ve seen something like this on Democracy Day,” she said.

At the end of the health walk, the crowd returned to the council secretariat, where they were welcomed with light refreshments.
