Delhi: Traffic Cluttered by Surge of Kanwariyas

Traffic Congestion in East and Northeast Delhi Due to Kanwariya Movement

Several areas in east and northeast Delhi experienced significant traffic congestion on Monday, with the situation expected to worsen on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. This is due to the closure of at least seven major road stretches connecting Uttar Pradesh, as a large number of kanwariyas are traveling through the region. The Delhi Traffic Police have issued two traffic advisories, detailing the affected roads and suggesting alternative routes for drivers.

The closed sections include the left carriageway of Grand Trunk (GT) Road from Keshav Chowk roundabout to Yudhistir Setu, ISBT Kashmere Gate, GT Road from Apsara border to Shahdara, Seemapuri to Apsara border, Anand Vihar to Apsara border, GT Road to Vivek Vihar underpass, from Swami Dayanand Marg (SDN Marg) to Keshav Chowk (towards GT Road), and Pushta Road to Shastri Park. These closures will remain in effect from 8am on Monday until 8am on Wednesday.

In a post on X, the Delhi Traffic Police mentioned that the left carriageway of GT Road from Keshav Chowk roundabout to Yudhishthir Setu (ISBT) will be closed from 8am on July 21 to 8am on July 23. They also provided five alternative routes for motorists to navigate the traffic disruptions.

For traffic coming from SDN Marg to Kashmere Gate ISBT, drivers can use the Keshav Chowk underpass towards Moujpur or take a U-turn from Shyam Chowk towards SDN Marg, Vikas Marg, or Master Plan Road for the ISBT. Those traveling from Seelampur, T-Point, and Road No 66 may use Wazirabad Road. For traffic from Dharampura T-Point, road number 66 up to Wazirabad Road or Keshav Chowk underpass towards Vikas Marg can be used.

Motorists heading from Old Iron Bridge towards GT Road can take Pusta Road towards Kailash Nagar or Gandhi Nagar. Similarly, those coming from Shastri Park Pushta Road can use GT Road from Shastri Park to Road No. 66 or up to Keshav Chowk Underpass towards Vikas Marg. Traffic from Khajoori Chowk will be diverted onto Wazirabad Road towards ISBT.

For traffic from Seemapuri towards Apsara border, the underpass towards Road Number 56 is recommended. Those coming from Anand Vihar can use the underpass towards Seemapuri to reach the Apsara border. Motorists can then take the Apsara border route and Road Number-56 while traveling on the GT Road to Vivek Vihar.

Drivers on SDN Marg can use Vikas Marg or NH-9, while those on Pusta Road can take NH-9 or the Ring Road. Additionally, the Agra Canal Road, which connects Noida and Faridabad via Kalindi Kunj-Yamuna bridge, has also been closed until Wednesday for the same reason.

These measures are aimed at ensuring the safe movement of kanwariyas and minimizing disruption for other road users. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the suggested alternative routes to avoid delays.
