DeKalb County Upgrades 911 Technology to Enhance Community Safety

FORT PAYNE, Ala. (
WAFF
) – DeKalb County dispatchers are getting an upgrade leaders hope will improve everyone’s safety.

Michael Posey, the EMA Director and chairman for the DeKalb County Communication Governance Committee, told WAFF’s Kalee Kniess all about the new Computer-Aided Dispatch system, otherwise known as CAD, that should be launching this August.

CAD isn’t brand new.

Many other agencies have used it for years.

But, this will be the first time DeKalb County will have it.

Posey said he is really excited about this new addition.

He said CAD instantly sends information from a dispatcher’s computer to the computers used every day by police officers and other first responders.

Anything a 911 dispatcher types into the system can immediately be seen by first responders.

This means information you give 911 dispatchers during an emergency is passed on to them as quickly as possible.

“We will be able to provide better safety for responders, better services to the community, and more efficient services to our community members,” said Posey.

He said this will help them achieve their goal of keeping the community safe.

“Ultimately, our goal is to provide the best service to our citizens that we can. That is the number one goal of all public safety officers and public safety personnel in the county,” said Posey.

Posey said he met with the rest of the County Communication Governance Committee today to talk more about the roll out. He says CAD should be implemented on August 1.
