Davidson Charter Academy Downsizes Staff by 26% Following Comprehensive Review

Davidson Charter Academy is cutting 26% of its staff after performance and certification reviews.

The cuts also come due to “evolving program needs,” the academy’s Board of Directors said in a letter Wednesday.

“There have been higher-than-usual personnel shifts recently, and I understand that this may have caused questions or uncertainty. However, many of these changes were necessary due to state requirements around staff credentials,” said Head of School Joseph Wood to parents. “Others were part of a broader curricular restructuring as we work to optimize instruction across grade levels and subjects. Some reflect our long-term goal of cultivating academic excellence and a more student-centered environment.”

The letter from the BOD says the academy ended the 2024–25 school year with 68 full-time employees.

“Of those, 50 were issued renewal contracts for the upcoming year, representing approximately 74% of our staff,” the letter reads.

The 26% cut is composed of:

  • 1 resignation (1.5%)
  • 4 non-renewals due to performance (5.9%)
  • 2 positions eliminated through elective course restructuring (2.9%)
  • 3 teacher assistant roles removed from the 2025–26 budget (4.4%)
  • 1 EC teacher not renewed due to lack of certification (1.5%)

Seven staff members (10.3%), who served as long-term substitutes, were not issued teaching contracts for 2025–26. The letter from the BOD said they were invited to reapply for long-term substitute positions.

According to the board, none of the seven long-term substitutes held a bachelor’s degree, “which is legally required for teaching contracts, according to North Carolina charter school law.”

Wood spoke more about the restructuring in his letter to parents: “When new leadership is brought in, it is common for the first year to focus on observation and assessment, with structural adjustments taking place at the end of that cycle. The steps we are taking now reflect that approach and are aligned with best practices for leading organizational change in school.”

It continues, “We are being intentional in hiring well-qualified staff who share our values and are aligned with the direction and the mission of the school. That process is already underway, and I am confident in the team we are assembling for our future.
