JR Motorsports Shines with New Talent and Strategic Leadership
The JR Motorsports team has become a focal point in the world of NASCAR. Over the past three race weekends, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s cars have captured the attention of fans across the country. The consecutive victories by drivers such as Daniel Suarez, Shane Van Gisbergen, and Connor Zilisch have elevated the team to new heights. These successes have also underscored the pivotal role that Dale Earnhardt Jr. plays as a team owner, providing not only guidance but also inspiration to his drivers, including an Xfinity Series rookie.
Despite these achievements, the No. 1 Chevrolet team has yet to secure a victory in the 2025 season, unlike the No. 88 and No. 9 teams. However, the team continues to work diligently, achieving eight top-10 finishes this year, including three of the last four races. A recent runner-up finish at EchoPark Speedway highlights their consistent performance, and the No. 1 driver recently shared the two secrets behind this success.

Carson Kvapil: Learning from Mentors
Carson Kvapil, who is just 18 years old, is still navigating the complexities of NASCAR. However, his talent has been evident since a young age. His father, Travis Kvapil, a 2003 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, played a crucial role in shaping him. Travis instilled in Carson a hands-on approach, requiring him to work on every race car he drove and even those driven by his brother, Caden. This experience led to Carson working a full 40-hour week at the JRM late model shop.
Kvapil first met Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2021 when the latter invited him to race a JRM Late Model Stock in a CARS Tour event. Leading for 100 laps and finishing fourth, this marked the beginning of a promising journey for Kvapil. He went on to win consecutive CARS Tour titles in 2022 and 2023, showcasing his growing potential.
Despite his youth, Kvapil is driven by a desire to keep winning. In a recent episode of NASCAR Live, he revealed the two mentors who fuel his drive. “Having Dale Jr. as your team owner but also as a friend in my eyes…he’s super ready to help,” Kvapil said. “He wants his team to run good, and he wants his friends and drivers to run good too.” He also credits his father and the crew of the No. 1 car for their support and guidance.

The Road to Victory
At the Pit Boss/Food Maxx 250 race in Sonoma Raceway, Kvapil delivered a strong performance, accumulating 43 points and finishing eighth. This result increased his buffer over the elimination line to 90 points. However, the challenge of securing a victory remains. Earlier in May, Earnhardt emphasized the importance of winning for Kvapil’s future. “Carson has to win. Carson’s future is not guaranteed,” Earnhardt said. “If the right things happen the right way, he could have a 20-year career, but it easily could go the opposite way.”
Kvapil is taking these words to heart. He is observing his more experienced teammates, learning from their strategies and approaches. His focus is on continuous improvement, aiming to close the gap between himself and his peers.
Learning from the Prodigies
With talented teammates like Daniel Suarez, Shane Van Gisbergen, and Connor Zilisch, the pressure to perform is high. Zilisch, in particular, has made a significant impact, securing four Xfinity Series victories since his debut in September 2024. This places him in sixth place in the regular season championship standings, while Kvapil trails closely behind.
Kvapil has faced tough competition, including a hard-fought battle with Zilisch at Circuit of The Americas. Despite these challenges, the No. 1 crew chief, Andrew Overstreet, believes that Kvapil is on the right path. “We’ve challenged Carson to do some things a little bit more aggressively, and everything he’s doing, he keeps getting better,” Overstreet said. “He is a smart racer and has good race craft, and he doesn’t tear up his stuff.”
Kvapil is committed to seizing every opportunity. “Every opportunity that comes, we’re going to be looking into it,” he said. As the season progresses, the team remains focused on achieving that elusive first win, setting the stage for a strong playoff run.
Dale Jr.’s pair of rookies are giving their best, with one striving to achieve a victory. Let’s see if Carson Kvapil can make history soon enough.
