Da Lat Airport to Shut Down for Upgrades in March 2026

The temporary shutdown for runway improvements at Lien Khuong International Airport, the primary entrance to the resort hill city of Da Lat, has been delayed until March 2026 instead of November this year.

The updated timetable received approval from representatives of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) and Lam Dong Province in a gathering held recently.

The renovation is anticipated to take approximately six months and finish prior to the 2026 rainy season.

It will feature a runway that is 3,250 meters in length and 45 meters in width, along with the construction of a turning area and upgrades to taxiways E1 and E2, brake strips, drainage systems, airfield lighting, and aviation signs.

The overall expense is projected to exceed 1.045 trillion VND (US$41 million).

As per the ACV, the airport, which processed almost a million travelers in the first half of this year, is exhibiting indications of decline.

Chairman Ho Van Muoi of Lam Dong Province requested a postponement because the project would have overlapped with the development of several major transportation infrastructure initiatives in the province, possibly increasing disturbances to tourism and the local economy.

The airport, located 28 km from Da Lat, was constructed by the French in 1933 and modernized by the Americans in 1956 during their presence in Vietnam.

The airport currently accommodates approximately 2.5 million travelers annually, primarily consisting of domestic passengers along with visitors from South Korea and Thailand.

The enhancement strategy aims for the airport to meet 4E specifications by 2030, enabling it to accommodate large aircraft like the Airbus A350 and manage five million travelers along with 20,000 tons of freight annually.

Following 2030, the runway will be expanded to 3,600 meters in length, and the terminal’s capacity will be raised to accommodate seven million travelers.
