During the current Kharif season (2025-26), cotton planting in Punjab has exceeded 3.011 million acres, up from 2.940 million acres cultivated over the corresponding timeframe last year, as reported by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.

The region has reached more than 86% of its seasonal objective for planting, which stands at 3.5 million acres, indicating a favorable progression in cultivating this crucial cash crop. In comparison, last year’s aim was set at 3.221 million acres. According to an announcement made by a representative from the ministry to a press agency, authorities are stepping up their initiatives to encourage greater cotton production through securing essential farming supplies like verified seeds, nutrients, and pest control products.

In North Punjab-covering areas including Sargodha, Faisalabad, Lahore, and Sahiwal-the sowing target for the current season was set at 400,000 acres, up from 317,000 acres last year. So far, 294,000 acres have been cultivated in the region, compared to 269,000 acres during the corresponding period in 2024.

The South Punjab regions including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Bahawalpur have demonstrated promising advancements, achieving 88% completion towards their planting goals. Cultivation of cotton in these areas now spans across 2.717 million acres, an increase from the previous year’s figure of 2.671 million acres within the corresponding timeframe. Authorities emphasized various governmental programs designed to bolster farmers’ skills and encourage better agricultural techniques intended for optimizing yields.

On a national scale, the federal government aims to cultivate cotton over 2.2 million hectares during the 2025-26 Kharif season, targeting total production at 10.18 million bales.

He mentioned that authorities are focusing on distributing high-yield certified seeds and ensuring the prompt availability of crucial resources throughout key cotton-producing regions. He further noted that an increase in cotton production will assist in supplying raw materials to domestic industries at viable prices.

It should be noted that over the first ten months of this fiscal year, textile exports from the country increased by 8.41 percent, totaling $14.834 billion compared to $13.683 billion for the same duration in the previous year.
