Cork approves 90 social homes at 20% below market price

New Social Housing Developments in Cork City

Cork City has taken a significant step forward in addressing housing needs with the approval of plans for nearly 90 new social housing units. These homes will be available at 20% below open market value, making them an attractive option for residents seeking affordable living options.

At their July meeting, city councillors approved two separate social housing schemes. The first initiative involves the construction of 80 new social homes in Glyntown, Glanmire. The second scheme will see the development of eight new units near Ballincollig town centre.

Glyntown Development Details

The Glyntown scheme, accessible via East Cliff Road, is designed to provide a diverse range of housing options. It includes four three-storey buildings that will house a mix of 30 three-, two-, and one-bedroom apartments. Additionally, there are two four-storey apartment blocks offering 48 three-, two-, and one-bedroom apartments.

The site also features a subdivision of the former Coach House, which will include two three-bedroom units spread over two floors. The project also incorporates 101 parking spaces and 204 bike parking spaces, aiming to support sustainable transportation.

Despite the positive developments, the scheme received over 600 signatures on one of the nine submissions made, with many residents expressing concerns about the scale and density of the project. This highlights the importance of community engagement in urban planning processes.

Ballincollig Housing Scheme

In addition to the Glyntown project, councillors approved plans for the construction of eight new social homes on a vacant property in Ballincollig. The site, located at the junction of Inniscarra View and the main street near the Poulavone roundabout, will see the demolition of the existing house and shed to make way for new developments.

The new housing will consist of one four-bed house, four two-bed townhouses, and three two-bed apartments. These units will range in height from two to two-and-a-half storeys, ensuring a variety of living options for potential residents.

Both projects will be delivered through a project agreement with Cetti Limited, a company known for its commitment to quality housing solutions.

Carraig Dún Affordable Housing Scheme

In a related development, Cork City Council, in partnership with Galtymore Homes, announced the Carraig Dún affordable housing scheme in Killeens, near Blarney. This initiative will provide nine three-bedroom semi-detached homes available for purchase at €320,000.

The online application portal for this scheme is set to open early next month, offering eligible applicants the opportunity to apply for these affordable homes. The scheme is primarily aimed at first-time buyers who do not own any other property, although exceptions may be considered for ‘Fresh Start’ applicants.

Income limits are in place, and potential applicants can find more information about the qualifying criteria on the official website, carraigdun.ie. The online application portal will open at 12 noon on August 6 and will close at midnight on August 27.

These developments reflect a broader effort by local authorities to address housing shortages and provide affordable options for residents. As these projects move forward, they are expected to make a meaningful impact on the lives of many individuals and families in Cork City.
