Conor Mowlds Steps Down from Port of Cork Position

Key Leadership Change at the Port of Cork

The Port of Cork Company has recently announced a significant change in its leadership structure, with its chief commercial officer, Conor Mowlds, stepping down from his role. This departure marks the end of an era for the company, as Mowlds has been instrumental in driving its growth and development since joining in 2018.

Mowlds is leaving to pursue a new international opportunity within the maritime sector. His decision comes after years of dedicated service, during which he played a crucial role in advancing the company’s strategic goals. One of his most notable achievements was his involvement in securing a substantial funding package to support the development of new port infrastructure tailored for the offshore renewable energy (ORE) sector. This initiative is critical for enabling the port to handle the large ships and specialized equipment required for constructing offshore wind farms.

Just last month, Mowlds had the opportunity to brief EU Commissioner Michael McGrath on the company’s ORE plans and funding needs. This high-level engagement highlighted his influence and the importance of his work in shaping the future of the port. His efforts have not only supported the local economy but also positioned the Port of Cork as a key player in Ireland’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

Prior to his tenure at the Port of Cork, Mowlds served as the head of the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy. Over the years, he has held several senior positions across both the public and private sectors in Ireland and the UK. These roles have included positions with prominent organizations such as GAC Group, NMCI Services, the Irish Maritime Development Office, and the Marine Institute. His extensive experience has made him a respected figure in the maritime industry.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mowlds has also contributed to the broader maritime community. He currently serves as the chairperson of Cruise Ireland, an organization that promotes cruise tourism in the region. Recently, he was appointed to the board of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce, further demonstrating his commitment to fostering economic collaboration between Ireland and the UK.

Born in Dublin, Mowlds holds a degree in Maritime Business and Law from Southampton. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, underscoring his deep understanding of the logistics and transport sectors. His academic and professional background has equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead and innovate within the maritime industry.

Port of Cork Company CEO, Ann Doherty, expressed her gratitude for Mowlds’ contributions. “His deep industry expertise, commercial acumen, and dedication to the port’s development have played a significant role in shaping our future. We wish Conor every success as he embarks on this exciting new chapter in his international career,” she said.

As the company moves forward, interim arrangements are being made to ensure continuity in operations. The Port of Cork will soon publish details about the recruitment process for the chief commercial officer role, allowing interested candidates to apply for this important position. This transition highlights the company’s commitment to maintaining strong leadership and continued growth in the dynamic maritime sector.
