The electric vehicle company SAGLEV has introduced its initial locally built high-end electric SUV, the M-HERO, as a step forward in promoting sustainable and eco-friendly energy within Nigeria’s car industry.
At the vehicle’s launch on Monday in Lagos, SAGLEV’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Sam Faleye, called the announcement a significant move towards sustainability and economic growth.
He stated, “This goes beyond merely launching a vehicle; it’s about shaping a future rooted in innovation, employment opportunities, and a sense of national pride in domestic production.”
As per Falaye, the latest M-HERO electric car, built at SAGLEV’s newly established manufacturing plant in Lagos, offers a maximum range of 1,000 kilometers in its extended model, vehicle-to-load power functionality, and drone coordination for distant monitoring.
The head of the automotive company also suggested upcoming enhancements, such as self-defense and military-level capabilities.
He mentioned that the Imota plant, which now has an assembly capacity of 2,500 vehicles per year, is anticipated to increase to 10,000 vehicles, providing a significant boost to local production and employment opportunities.
Dr. Faleye highlighted the wider economic effects of the initiative, mentioning lower vehicle imports, chances for skilled jobs, and fresh possibilities for Nigerian investors.
He stated, “We have developed a program that allows Nigerians to invest in electric vehicles and receive profits. This is focused on making access and opportunities more inclusive.”
He also highlighted the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles, estimating daily charging expenses to be around N2,000, significantly less than the N14,000 average for gasoline-powered options.
SAGLEV is also set to establish a network of electric vehicle charging points throughout Lagos and has pledged specialized post-purchase assistance for buyers.
Other speakers at the event included the Ranodu of Imota, Oba Mudashiru Bakare-Agoro, who praised the launch as an indication of the host community’s increasing industrial significance.
“From the rice mill to this electric vehicle assembly plant, Imota is emerging as a key center of national significance,” he stated, noting that although there are current challenges such as insufficient charging facilities, the M-HERO marks a courageous step towards cleaner and more accessible transportation.
