Cole White’s Art Passion Leads to Exhibition Success

A Journey of Creativity and Connection

Cole White has always had a passion for activities that bring joy to his life, such as bowling with his best friend, building Lego, and creating art. At 25 years old, Cole lives with Down syndrome and is often non-verbal. However, through the power of art, he has discovered a new way to express himself and connect with others.

A Supportive Partnership

Hollie Wisniewski, a support worker, first met Cole in 2023. Since then, the two have formed a strong bond, meeting every fortnight to brainstorm creative projects, shop for craft supplies, and create artworks together. Their collaboration has been an enriching experience for both, allowing Cole to explore various techniques and mediums, including spray paint, stencils, mosaics, and collage.

Art Inspired by Love and Passion

The duo draws inspiration from things that Cole and his family love. For example, Cole’s mother, Vikki, is a cat lover, and so are they. This shared interest led to artwork featuring cats. Other pieces have focused on Cole’s father’s love for sneakers, his uncle’s enthusiasm for bikes, and some of Cole’s favorite things, like Spiderman and soft drinks.

Initially, the goal was to create pieces that could be displayed in Vikki’s home. Cole enjoys sending photos of his artwork to his mother at the end of each fortnight, showing her all the creations he has made. Many of these pieces eventually find their way to her house, where they are proudly displayed on the walls.

A Growing Success

What began as a simple idea has now evolved into something much bigger. Cole’s artwork is being purchased by others, and he has even had his very first exhibition. The event was a great success, with plans already in place for a second exhibition next year.

A Proud Moment for the Family

Vikki, Cole’s mother, expressed her excitement about the exhibition. She mentioned that over half of the artwork on display was sold during the event, with only a few pieces from her private collection available for viewing. “It’s been really exciting watching Cole develop his art,” she said. “It started as an idea we thought he would enjoy, and now it has taken us to a level where we have an exhibition here tonight, which is really cool.”

Vikki also shared how proud she is of receiving Cole’s work. “He’s always really proud to point them out on my walls,” she said. “I’m very proud — very proud indeed.” As a parent, she believes in the importance of her children being happy and doing what they love. “It’s about living their best life and doing something you love — don’t we all want to do something we love?”

Supporting Future Endeavors

The proceeds from Cole’s sales will go towards buying more canvases, paint, and supplies to continue supporting his artistic journey. The co-founders of the disability support company that Hollie works for were also thrilled to see Cole explore his full creative potential.

Jason Wisniewski, a co-founder of Vana Care, highlighted Hollie’s role in guiding Cole to choose the art he wants, the colors he prefers, and to explore different mediums. Jesse Trout, another co-founder, emphasized the importance of finding support workers who align with the individual’s passions and personality. “You need to find someone that aligns with the person they’re supporting,” he said.
