Dhaka Traffic Disruption as Auto-Rickshaw Drivers Protest Outside BRTA Office
On Sunday, a significant traffic disruption occurred in Dhaka as auto-rickshaw drivers from the city’s outskirts blocked the main road in front of the BRTA (Bus Rapid Transit Authority) office in Banani. The protest severely impacted traffic movement along the Uttara-Mohakhali route, causing major inconvenience to commuters.

The drivers, primarily from outside the capital, are demanding the right to operate within Dhaka. Currently, they are not permitted to do so, which has led to growing frustration among them. According to reports, a group of CNG (compressed natural gas) drivers gathered at the BRTA office around 12:30 p.m. and blocked the road, halting vehicular movement in both directions—Uttara to Mohakhali and vice versa.
Police Response and Traffic Management Measures
Russell Sarwar, officer in charge of the Banani police station, confirmed the incident to UNB. He mentioned that additional police personnel were deployed to manage the situation and prevent further escalation. Despite the efforts, the blockage continued for several hours, leading to widespread congestion and delays.
To manage the traffic chaos, authorities implemented diversion strategies across key routes. Vehicles entering the area were redirected through alternative paths such as Kakoli-Gulshan-2-Gulshan-1-Amtoli or via Gulshan-1 to Police Plaza. Similarly, outgoing traffic was also rerouted to ensure smooth movement.

Elevated Expressway as Key Route for Commuters
One of the primary routes used for rerouting is the Elevated Expressway. This highway has become a critical alternative for commuters heading towards different parts of the city. Traffic from Uttara moving towards Tejgaon and Hatirjheel is being directed through this expressway, according to a traffic police officer who wished to remain anonymous.
The use of the Elevated Expressway has helped ease some of the pressure on the main roads, but it has also led to increased congestion on the expressway itself. Commuters have reported longer travel times and higher levels of stress due to the ongoing disruptions.
Impact on Daily Life and Public Reaction
The protest has had a ripple effect on daily life for residents and workers in the area. Many people rely on the Uttara-Mohakhali route for their commutes, and the sudden blockage has forced them to find alternative ways to reach their destinations. Some have opted to take longer routes, while others have chosen to delay their journeys until the situation improves.
Local businesses in the area have also felt the impact. With fewer customers passing through, some shop owners have reported a drop in sales. Additionally, public transport services have been affected, with buses and other vehicles struggling to navigate the altered traffic patterns.
Calls for Resolution and Future Steps
As the protest continues, there are growing calls for a resolution to the issue. Local leaders and community representatives have urged the authorities to address the concerns of the auto-rickshaw drivers and find a way to allow them to operate legally within the city. At the same time, there are concerns about the potential for further disruptions if the issue remains unresolved.
The situation highlights the need for better communication between the authorities and the drivers, as well as more effective traffic management strategies to handle such incidents in the future. For now, commuters and businesses in the area are left waiting for a solution that will restore normalcy to their daily routines.
