GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – A high school teacher in Georgetown County wants to encourage students to read while giving them a safe and comfortable place to do so.
Brittany Hilburn is a first-year teacher at Waccamaw High School in Georgetown. She says reading is crucial for learning and development and anything that gets a book in a student’s hand is beneficial.
Hilburn, who will teach English 3 and English 3 Honors next year, says she had a calling to be a teacher and lives out her dream job every day.
“I love these children so much more than even I knew or and I thought that you could love children that aren’t yours,” Hiburn says.
Being an English teacher, she says having a calm and inviting space to read is important for students, contributing some of her own time and money to make that happen.
“I’ve invested in some alternative lighting, I’ve got some signage that’s really positive and encouraging. I’ve got some lamps. I’ve painted a wall,” Hiburn says. “I bought some primer and I sat here for a day and a half and I painted a whole wall by myself!”
She says she has books and the space for a cozy reading corner, but not all of the materials, like furniture, to make it happen yet.
“I started the Donors Choose for a library nook just to create a space for my students to get more excited about reading and engaged about reading,” Hiburn says.
She says her students are excited about the possibility of getting a book nook, and it will inspire them to want to read more.
“They’re already asking me about my room next year and what the theme is going to be and the changes that I’m going to be making,” she says. “I did mention that this was an aspiration of mine to have this life library nook and they’re so excited”
She wants the book nook to be a space for students to come and go.
“This is a one-time investment that is really going to pay off for every student that comes through my classroom moving forward,” Hiburn says.
