Tuesday night’s game between the Connecticut Sun and Indiana Fever featured plenty of fireworks.
Tensions started rising in the third quarter when Jacy Sheldon hit Caitlin Clark in the face. A few seconds later, Marina Mabrey entered the picture and
bumped Clark to the ground
with a blatant cheap shot. The WNBA officials gave Clark and Mabrey technical fouls, whereas Sheldon receivedĀ a flagrant 1 foul.
Clearly, the Fever didn’t forget about that cheap shot on Clark.
During the final minute of the game, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham
committed a very hard foul on Sheldon
. That led to a massive brawl that spilled into the first row of seats behind the basket.
After taking several minutes to review the play, the referees ejected Cunningham and gave her a flagrant-2 foul.
Sheldon was also ejected since she picked up her second technical foul.
Here’s the foul that started a legitimate brawl:
Some fans are praising Cunningham for having Clark’s back. Others, however, thought her foul was uncalled for.
“Sophie Cunningham is who Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever needed. No fear energy and bring it. Marina hits and runs. Sophie brings it,” one fan wrote on X.
“Sophie Cunningham standing on business for Caitlin Clark,” another fan tweeted.
There’s no question the WNBA will have to release a statement on this Tuesday’s incident. Altercations like this can’t happen on a consistent basis.
It’ll be interesting to see if any players from the Fever or Sun are suspended for their actions.
