Clark County Launches Pet Microchip Program Ahead of Mandatory Start Date

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A $5 pet microchipping service is part of a new program by Clark County to help keep cats and dogs out of shelters and with their families.

The service comes in advance of the county’s mandatory pet microchipping requirement, which takes effect on Aug. 4, for residents in unincorporated Clark County. As part of the changes to CCC Title 10, each dog or cat over four months of age must be implanted with microchip identification per
CCC 10.08.070(b)
.

The new county program is in partnership with three local animal welfare organizations: Hearts Alive Village, Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, and Nevada SPCA.

“Too many pets are ending up in our shelters and rescues because there is no way to identify where home is for them,” Clark County Commissioner
Michael Naft
said. “By making microchipping mandatory and partnering with local non-profits to offer this service at low-cost, we’re making pet safety and animal well-being more accessible.”

By linking pets to up-to-date owner information, microchips keep animals out of crowded shelters, leading to faster, happier homecomings. When pets are found, shelters, veterinarians, and animal control officers can scan them and immediately contact their families, diverting and reducing shelter stays.

  • Microchipping is by appointment only – space is limited
  • Microchips are $5 per pet
  • Microchip appointments will only be available on Wednesdays (starting March 5th, 2025) from 1 p.m.-4 p.m.
  • Microchipping is available for both cats and dogs
  • Limit of 3 pets per household
  • Dogs must be on a leash
  • Cats must be in a pet carrier

For pets already microchipped, officials urge owners to verify and update their contact information with the chip registry. Outdated information can delay or prevent reunification, even if the pet is chipped.
