Chinese Students Arrested in South Korea for Filming U.S. Aircraft Carrier

Pakistan, June 26 — BUSAN – South Korean authorities have arrested two Chinese international students foSouth Korean authorities have arrested two Chinese international students and a South Korean naval base using drones and mobile phones.

According to AFP, the Busan Metropolitan Police stated that the students were detained on Wednesday for violating South Korea’s Military Bases and Installations Protection Act. Their actions were considered a threat to national security and military interests.

The two students, aged between 30 and 40, allegedly recorded footage of the Republic of Korea Fleet Command and the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. The carrier was docked in Busan for joint military exercises when the illegal filming occurred.

Police added that this was the first time foreign nationals have been arrested under such charges in South Korea. A third Chinese national is also under investigation but has not been taken into custody yet.

Authorities seized 172 photos and 22 video files, some of which were shared on social media platforms like TikTok without permission. The suspects reportedly used Chinese-manufactured drones that require user registration, which transfers data to servers based in China.

This incident follows last month’s case where South Korea fined Chinese e-commerce giant TEMU nearly $1 million for illegally transferring Korean users’ personal data to China and other countries, raising fresh concerns over data privacy and security.
