China is allegedly striving to mentally integrate humans with technology as part of its continuous attempts to rival in theartificial intelligence race.
The communist countryemploying brain-computer interface (BCI) technology — devices that facilitate interaction between the brain and an external system — to “enhance human thinking and collaboration between humans and machines,” TheWashington Times reported, referencing a presentation by Georgetown specialists given to U.S. officials.
These encompass invasive, minimally invasive, and non-invasive BCIs, as reported by The Washington Times.
Invasive BCIs require surgical insertion of electrodes into the brain, whereas non-invasive BCIs utilize sensors placed on the scalp to track brain activity. In contrast, minimally-invasive BCIs involve placing devices, but these do not enter brain tissue, as stated in a report from the National Library of Medicine.

The United States has mainly concentrated on creating language models to advanceAI technology. However, China is challenging conventional approaches to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI) — a form of AI capable of performing as well as or better than humans in cognitive tasks, as stated by William Hannas, lead analyst at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
“There are numerous opportunities available, but if you’re seeking AI that mirrors human capabilities, you won’t achieve it simply by expanding the number of parameters [in models],” Hannas said to The Washington Times.

Hannas, who formerly worked for the CIA, gathered Chinese government documents that provided details on the nation’s AI funding strategies for this year and the previous year. The strategies involve various brain-related AI methods, according to The Washington Times.
Furthermore, state-controlled Chinese media have reported statements indicating that the future entails integrating AI as a physical component of humans, as mentioned by the Washington Times.
In 2018, two technology experts focused on brain-inspired AI methods were also hired by Chinese officials, according to a report from The Washington Times.
China’s innovation in artificial intelligence“Accelerating,” said Michael Kratsios, head of the White House Office of Science and Technology, to Fox News Digital in April. However, he emphasized that the United States continues to be the leading force in AI, and the Trump administration’s “promote and protect” approach will reinforce this position.
