MONROVIA —The Chinese government, via its embassy in Liberia, is sending 92 Liberian students to China for advanced studies through various scholarship programs, while also offering 172 local scholarships to students at the University of Liberia, Cuttington University, Bomi Community College, and Tubman University.

The statement was released on Monday night at a gathering held at the Chinese Embassy in Monrovia, celebrating the outgoing students and local scholarship winners.

Chinese envoy Yin Chengwu praised the students, referring to the occasion as “a significant milestone” in Sino-Liberian educational collaboration. “Heartiest congratulations to all the scholarship recipients! We are proud of you,” he stated.

Ninety-two recipients are traveling to China to pursue studies in different disciplines, whereas 172 local scholarships will assist students who are studying in Liberia. The Chinese government stated that this program is a part of continuous efforts to enhance human resource development within the country.

Ambassador Yin thanked the Liberian government and collaborating organizations for their assistance. “I want to convey my heartfelt thanks to the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Monrovia City Council, and other pertinent government departments, as well as the universities, for their collaboration and support,” he mentioned.

He highlighted that the China scholarship initiative seeks to “strengthen exchanges and collaboration, foster mutual understanding and friendship between China and Liberia,” calling it an example of the two countries’ strategic partnership and their dedication to “creating a community with a shared future for humanity.”

Emphasizing China’s advancements in education since 1949, Yin presented data indicating that the country’s illiteracy rate has decreased from approximately 80% to 2.67%, and primary school enrollment has risen from 20% to almost 100%. “Education is consistently building the foundation for people’s well-being and strengthening the base of national prosperity,” he stated.

The Ambassador noted that education is also a key component of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, which China “strongly supports.” He referenced previous Chinese support, such as constructing the Fendell Campus of the University of Liberia, renovating the Monrovia Vocational Training Center, and aiding the Confucius Institute in providing Chinese language courses.

Since 1981, around 2,000 Liberians have pursued studies in China through scholarships, with more than 300 engaging in activities at the Confucius Institute, including the Chinese Bridge Competition and teacher development programs. He mentioned that since 2010, almost 3,000 Liberians have taken part in short-term training programs in China.

Speaking to the scholars who are leaving, Yin shared three aspirations: a continuous desire for learning, a commitment to serving the nation, and a contribution to enhancing mutual relations. “You are the envoys of China-Liberia friendship, the strongest bridge and the most effective link between the two peoples,” he said to them.

The Chinese Embassy has also contributed to Liberian education by initiating projects including the construction of schools in Grand Gedeh and Maryland, solar-powered classrooms in Grand Bassa, and providing support to the Monrovia Consolidated School System.

Ambassador Yin mentioned that under the direction of President Xi Jinping and President Boakai, the future for educational collaboration between the two nations is broad, promising, and holds even greater potential.
