Parents from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have appealed to the federal government to implement strong measures against the increasing presence of prohibited items, especially those aimed at children.
During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja, parents voiced their worries about the rising consumption of flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes among young people.
Their conversation was among the events celebrating the 2025 Children’s Day.
They contended that significant progress was impossible if kids found themselves ensnared in an addictive pattern from childhood.
Mrs. Olamide Bello, a parent of three from Gwarinpa, stated: “Our kids can’t effectively learn or prosper at school when they’re dealing with addiction. These flavored vape pens and tobacco items are jeopardizing their well-being and prospects.”
Mrs Comfort Shamaki, who trades goods and has four children, mentioned witnessing young individuals freely purchasing products at Garki Market.
“They have a sweet scent and are placed near snack items deliberately luring customers,” she explained.
Ms. Chinyere Eze, a parent and school volunteer from Asokoro, mentioned that children as young as 13 years old were observed using e-cigarettes, copying behaviors they witnessed on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
