Yesterday marked the second week of the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival, featuring a provincial-level contest in Mutare.
The contest, organized in collaboration with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dance Association (ZNTDA), commenced on May 10 with a Midlands provincial event at Mkoba 4 in Gweru.
Yesterday, the Muchina Muhombe Bar in Mutare played host to the Manicaland provincial competition.
The following Saturday, all paths will converge at Lwendulu Bar in Hwange for the Matabeleland North clash and simultaneously at EMM Leisure Sports Bar in Banket for the Mashonaland West encounters.
The theme for this year’s festival isNgoma Ngairire Shamwari, Tshay’sgubhu Mngane.
“The organizers stated that this year’s festival aims to be an energetic showcase of our culture and heritage via traditional dance,” they said in a press release.
Boasting more than six decades of history, the prestigious Chibuku Neshamwari festival is preparing for another thrilling edition as it engages audiences by showcasing cultural fervor, dancing, and traditions.
Chibuku Neshamwari began on May 10 and will conclude on July 19.
To prepare for the main event, there will be 10 provincial finals conducted, culminating in the national finals.
Contestants have the opportunity to win cash rewards at both the provincial and national levels.
The previous year’s winners were from the Mashonaland East province, where they demonstrated the Mbende dance.
The provincial final will see winners walk away US$2 500 with first runner and second runner up pocketing US$1 500 and US$1 000 respectively.
The top prize is $15,000, with the first runner-up taking home $10,000 and the second runner-up receiving $7,500.
The organizers have encouraged potential participants to sign up their teams with the NACZ and ZNTDA.
