Major Seizures of Smuggled E-Cigarettes and Cigarettes at Chennai International Airport
Customs officials at Chennai International Airport have recently made significant seizures of e-cigarettes and cigarettes that were smuggled from Malaysia and Dubai. These incidents highlight the ongoing efforts by authorities to combat illegal trade and ensure compliance with national regulations.
On July 16, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Chennai Air Customs conducted a routine inspection and intercepted three consignments originating from Malaysia. The packages were declared as cloth hangers and textile materials at the Foreign Post Office in Chennai. However, upon closer examination, they were found to contain 29 kg of e-cigarettes, amounting to a total of 998 units of the ELFBAR brand. The estimated value of these contraband items was approximately Rs 23 lakh. The seizure was carried out under Sections 110 and 111 of the Customs Act, in conjunction with the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (PECA) of 2019.
In another incident on July 14, customs officers seized 25 kg of cigarettes, totaling 2 lakh units, from 10 different consignments that had arrived from Dubai. These cigarettes, which included well-known brands such as Monds Superslims and Platinum Seven 7, were reportedly disguised as chewable tobacco products and used clothes. They were being transported through the Foreign Post Office to various addresses in Chennai. The seizure was executed under Sections 110 and 111 of the Customs Act, 1962, along with Section 7 of the COTPA Act, 2003.
These actions underscore the vigilance of customs authorities in identifying and intercepting illicit goods that are often concealed within legitimate shipments.
