A fire is still burning through wooded regions in the village of Derdara, located in Morocco’s Chefchaouen province, with attempts to control the flames continuing since Saturday. Officials report that at least 500 hectares of forest have been lost so far.
Fouad El Assali, director of the National Center for Climate Risk Management at the National Agency for Water and Forests, acknowledged the level of destruction, noting that agricultural land near the forest, which is owned by local residents and farmers, has also been impacted.
“The fire remains active, with ongoing attempts to put it out,” El Assali stated in an audio message received by AR. He mentioned that both ground and air firefighting teams are participating in the operation.

Approximately 450 individuals from different fire and emergency response teams are involved in fighting the fire. They are assisted by four Canadair aircraft designed for water dropping and four Turbo Thrush planes.
El Assali stated there has been “significant progress” in controlling the fire, with three of the four main hotspots now contained. Firefighters are concentrating on putting out the last major outbreak, as well as handling smaller surges with ground crews.
Meanwhile, officials have completely controlled a different wildfire in the Benguerich forest close to the city of Tetouan. This fire spread across 75 hectares of trees.
A series of wildfires have occurred in the northern part of Morocco in recent days, aligning with the annual “Smaïm” season, which is characterized by intense heat, and worsened by powerful “Chergui” winds that have increased fire dangers throughout the area.
