Actress and filmmaker Akinyanju Omobolarinde, known as Ashabi Simple, discusses her career and various topics with Oghenovovo Egodu-Michael.

Could you please provide more details so I can assist you better?

ackground?

I originate from a family of six siblings, being the eldest. Our roots lie in Idanre, Ondo State, yet we were raised in Ogun State.

Which educational institutions did you go to?

During my high school years, I studied at Ijaye Ojokoro High School located in Lagos. Following that, I moved on to Olabisi Onabanjo University situated in Ogun State, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in Yoruba Language. My initial preference was to pursue Theatre Arts; however, as I did not secure admission into that program, I opted for Yoruba since I believed it had some relevance.

At what point did you realize your passion for acting?

I have always been passionate about acting. During my time in high school, I became part of the drama club and took up dancing as well. Our group participated in numerous performances and contests where I often portrayed supporting characters. Prior to venturing into film production, I spent much of my time crafting tales and penning screenplays. Following each piece, I would seek feedback from others to gauge their interest in the narrative.

At what point did you begin sharing your films on the internet?

Although I’m not particularly active on social media, I had been using
Instagram
Since 2016 until my account got disabled, prior to that period, I was actively using the platform.
Facebook
I might not frequently communicate online, but my presence is constant.

When did you begin making your own movies?

I’ve always aspired to become a producer. In 2014, I created my debut film which was released on CD. The movie featured unknown actors and we promoted it ourselves. Later, in 2019, I launched my initial YouTube production called ‘Ato’.

Considering the path from selling movies to sharing content online, can you articulate your feelings about this transition?

Life unfolds through various phases, which I view as opportunities for development. As we’ve welcomed the digital era, including platforms such as
YouTube
, certain filmmakers continue to create tangible copies. This showcases the varied strategies within the sector. While some concentrate on digital platforms and online viewership, others stay dedicated to conventional movie theaters. Both approaches come with their own set of difficulties and advantages.

Were you met with support or criticism for your initial films?

No one criticized us because making a movie itself was considered impressive at that time. The city of Ifo in Ogun State, our base, had gained recognition as a hub for filmmaking. Typically, my mother would accommodate the entire team when they came to town for shoots. Those projects required spending more than N100,000. For each project, I traveled to Alaba International Market in Lagos to handle graphic designs, get the film jackets printed, and duplicate discs. Afterward, I returned home, packaged everything up, and went out selling them door-to-door. Additionally, I organized a launch event for one of these movies—it turned into quite an adventure!

What types of messages would you like to convey through your movies?

I don’t produce films without significant messages. These messages should be integrated into the narrative. In ‘My Relative,’ I explored the idea that not all questions require answers, and certain truths might be best left undiscovered as they could lead to harm.

In ‘Teni Teni’, I emphasized the significance of valuing individuals during challenging moments since there is no redemption in the afterlife. My films consistently carry messages aimed at educating, entertaining, and enlightening audiences.

What are your thoughts on karma?

Absolutely, it happens frequently. I don’t consider myself a malicious individual, thus I believe I can manage whatever karmic consequences come my way. I’ve witnessed karma unfold dramatically for those who harbored ill feelings toward me. Should someone engage in wrongdoing, even if delayed, it inevitably catches them. Each of us ultimately faces the repercussions of our actions.

Who are some of the distinguished actors that you like collaborating with?

I enjoy collaborating with Odunlade Adekola because he has a carefree spirit, remains modest, and never looks down upon others. Working alongside Amuda Eko and Juliet Jatto is equally delightful; they both have a strong commitment to their work. Additionally, Zainab Bakre is someone I appreciate being part of my team.

What type of assistance have you gotten throughout your journey, and which individuals have been the biggest supporters for you?

Following God, my principal advocate is my director, Kayode Adebayo. His presence is essential to the completeness of my journey. He has consistently stood by my side.

While fans respect your strong work ethic, they frequently criticize your connection with Portable. What’s your take on this situation?

No one grasps my circumstances. Only I comprehend the intricacies of my existence. Others may offer various opinions, yet I remain indifferent. My well-being is paramount. I am content and joyful, and that’s all that truly matters.

What strategies do you use to deal with controversies?

I’m a calm individual who doesn’t let issues bother me easily. Online interactions frequently differ from what we experience in real life. Since many folks tend not to discuss their actual lives on the internet, this rarely affects me.

After featuring various kinds of soap in previous videos, Portable faced speculation from viewers who thought he could possibly be using charms on people he goes out with. What do you make of this?

Those who go to white-garment churches are familiar with an array of worship items such as candles, soaps, and water. These places have their own set of customs too. It isn’t unusual for people not to object when Imams utilize soap, yet the same action performed by a traditionalist might be viewed as sinister. No one can control me since I am asserting my autonomy. I put in considerable effort and do not consider myself burdensome. Occasionally, he acts solely to stay relevant. This defines how he lives.

What strategies do you use to handle personality disparities in your partnership, particularly when you have a composed attitude?

If you keep up with his posts, you’ll notice he occasionally mentions that social media isn’t reflective of real life. In reality, Okiki remains quite composed. We never engage in physical altercations; we might have disagreements online, but they remain confined to digital spaces. Whenever he’s nearby, he acts like an infant. I simply observe his behavior online as though watching a performer. Online, I’m mild-mannered, and even more so when face-to-face. However, should someone provoke me, I won’t hold my tongue.

What steps do you take to get ready for a character?

Being part of the crew has allowed me to witness numerous performances from actors. An actress with proper training would grasp these fundamentals easily. With my experience in filmmaking, I find it easier to adopt different characters.

What difficulties have you encountered as a female professional in the entertainment sector?

I’ve encountered difficulties before, but those were back then. It was tough discerning who truly wished to assist because numerous individuals merely desired what lay beneath one’s clothing. My mentor had cautioned me about such behavior. I remained steadfast, and over time, others ceased pestering me. Nowadays, my sole challenge involves dealing with my husband’s problems; however, familial matters differ significantly from professional ones.

Have you ever experienced any problems with Portable regarding your responsibilities?

No, not really, but there was one particular scene that nearly created an issue. The actor attempted to seduce me during filming; he tried to lift my dress, which the producer then exploited by paying bloggers to publicize it for publicity purposes. This made me quite uncomfortable. When I discussed this situation with Portable, he simply told me to stay cautious. His composed response took me aback. He asked me to avoid kissing scenes, and since I share similar sentiments about impromptu smooches, I agreed without hesitation.

What strategies do you use to manage your professional responsibilities alongside your personal life?

God empowers me. My mother has been my pillar of strength, consistently backing me up. Being around people where I feel secure also makes everything more manageable.

What approach do you take when dealing with criticism?

If you’re self-assured, others’ views won’t affect you. Imagine buying medication intended for headaches but using it for stomachaches instead; saying it didn’t help wouldn’t be logical. Provided I’m aware of my own integrity, I concentrate on the uplifting aspects. Occasionally, individuals misuse something simply to gain notice.

Many believe that showcasing affluence is essential for achieving success in the entertainment industry. Has this mindset affected your professional journey?

Contentment is essential. People often suggest that I require better “presentation” or that my appearance needs improvement, yet honesty prevails with me. Life has been relatively easy for me, and deceit does not align with who I am. As someone inclined to speak freely, incorporating falsehoods into conversations feels excessive. This openness makes maintaining friendships challenging; hence, my primary relationships remain within my family since curbing my words proves difficult. Living an insincere existence simply doesn’t suit me.

Where did you first encounter Portable?

We connected through the internet. Once, he shared an interview from the BBC where he mentioned having sung for ten years. Another person questioned this claim, yet I believed he indeed had experience. In my past, I also pursued singing. He messaged me, which thrilled me as I harbored feelings for him. Thus, our conversations began. His energy and musical style have always impressed me.

Are there any interests or activities you pursue outside of your work as an actor and producer?

Not quite. My true passions lie in acting, singing, and scriptwriting.

Are you considering releasing music sometime in the future?

I’m unable to confirm at this moment, but I could potentially develop a narrative that incorporates singing.
