Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to Boost AI in 30 Schools Next Year

On top of things like teacher retention, high graduation rates, and increased salaries for teachers,
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
leaders are hopeful for what’s ahead, like AI.

Less than two weeks into summer break,
CMS leaders
are already setting goals for the upcoming school year. One goal? More AI in classrooms. Something they say parents ultimately support.

“We met with families, students, educators, the whole gamut of our stakeholders to get stakeholder feedback and where they were positioned as far as perception of AI,” Candace Salmon-Hosey, the CMS chief technology officer, said. “It was a mixture of scared and curious, just like we all are, because it’s uncharted territory, especially for public school systems.”

It comes after the district surveyed more than 10,000 students, families and staff about their views on the technology earlier this year.

Opinions were divided, with some staff members more cautious around academic integrity, student privacy and how AI could affect social skills. Still, most agree: AI should enhance learning, not replace it.

CMS Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill says they plan to have success with the use of AI  involving 30 schools within the district.

“You get there by having a clear understanding of AI, AI literacy and how we can use it to make all of our lives better, and that’s really what we’re focusing on,” Hill said.
