Charity Urges Direct Bedding Donations to Site

Animal Charity Requests Donors to Avoid Bedding in Donation Bins

An animal charity in Plymouth is urging the public to stop placing bedding items in its off-site donation bins. The decision comes as a result of health and hygiene concerns, with the charity emphasizing that while it appreciates donations, certain items are no longer suitable for the collection points.

Gables Cats and Dogs Home, which supports over 100 cats and kittens, along with 45 to 50 dogs at the center, has seen its donation bins become increasingly full. Manager Claire Sparkes explained that large items like duvets have been taking up too much space, making it difficult for people to access smaller, more essential items such as pet food and litter.

“Duets are quite big and take up a lot of space,” said Ms. Sparkes. “We do need them at Gables, especially for the Greyhounds, who love them—though not feather ones. When a duvet gets ripped open, feathers go everywhere, and staff spend hours cleaning it up.”

Despite the challenges, the charity still requires duvets, towels, and blankets for the animals in their care. These items are particularly useful when washing dogs that get muddy or wet. Additionally, the charity needs food, treats, and toys to keep the animals comfortable and entertained.

The donation bins, located at various supermarkets and stores across the city, feature a sign that clearly states “no bedding in here please.” However, this message has not always been heeded by well-meaning donors.

Ms. Sparkes emphasized that the charity is looking for any items that can be used for the animals. She encouraged people to donate cat and dog treats, as well as other items that can help spoil the animals.

What the Charity Needs

  • Duvets (not feather-filled)
  • Towels
  • Blankets
  • Pet food
  • Treats
  • Toys

The charity also relies on foster homes for some of the cats and kittens in their care. With so many animals under their protection, every donation helps make a difference.

While the charity appreciates the support from the community, they are asking for a change in how donations are made. Instead of using the off-site bins for bedding, they encourage people to bring these items directly to the shelter.

This shift will allow the team to manage the donations more effectively and ensure that all necessary supplies are available for the animals. It also helps maintain a cleaner and safer environment for both the animals and the staff.

By making small adjustments in how donations are handled, the community can continue to support the animals at Gables Cats and Dogs Home without causing unnecessary challenges for the staff.
