Casablanca Airport Expansion Begins for 2030 Terminal

Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport Begins Construction for New Terminal

Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport has officially started the groundwork for a new terminal that is expected to be completed by 2030. This ambitious project, valued at 15 billion dirhams, aims to significantly enhance the airport’s capacity and improve the overall passenger experience.

The new terminal will accommodate an additional 20 million passengers annually, raising the airport’s total capacity to 35 million per year. This expansion is part of Morocco’s broader Aéroports 2030 strategy, which seeks to modernize and expand the country’s aviation infrastructure to meet growing demand and support economic development.

Key Contractors and Technical Studies

The initial phase of the project involves earthworks, which have been awarded to Moroccan company STAM. The contract covers eight months of preparatory work, marking a crucial step in the construction process. ONDA, the national airport authority, has already received bids from 27 qualified groups, with construction contracts expected to be announced by the end of the year.

The design of the new terminal has been developed through extensive technical studies conducted by several international and local firms. These include Ala Concept, RSHP Architects, and Egis Bâtiments International. Their collaboration has ensured that the terminal will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and innovative features.

Sustainable and Efficient Design

One of the main objectives of the new terminal is to improve passenger flow and operational efficiency. The design emphasizes high-capacity processing, ensuring that travelers can move smoothly through the airport without delays. In addition, the terminal will incorporate energy-efficient systems and climate resilience measures, aligning with global trends toward sustainable infrastructure.

This focus on sustainability is particularly important given the increasing emphasis on reducing carbon footprints in the aviation sector. The new terminal is expected to set a benchmark for environmental responsibility in Morocco’s airports.

Improved Connectivity

A major highlight of the project is the inclusion of a new TGV (high-speed rail) station. This station will provide direct connections between the airport and key cities in Morocco. Travelers will be able to reach Rabat in just 30 minutes and Marrakech in under an hour, making the airport a more attractive option for both domestic and international travelers.

The integration of high-speed rail into the airport’s infrastructure is a significant step toward improving regional connectivity and supporting tourism and business travel.

Future Outlook

With the groundwork now underway, the new terminal represents a major milestone in Morocco’s efforts to modernize its transportation network. The project is not only about expanding capacity but also about enhancing the quality of services provided to passengers.

As the construction progresses, it is expected to create numerous job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region. The completion of the terminal in 2030 will mark a new era for Casablanca’s airport, positioning it as a key hub in North Africa.

Overall, this project underscores Morocco’s commitment to investing in infrastructure that meets international standards and supports long-term economic development.
