This year, the school benefited from the involvement of Amy Hyde, the careers lead, who participated in the Start Small: Dream Big Primary Careers Pilot. As a result, pupils had the opportunity to interact with specialists from the aviation and maritime industries. Additionally, Software City, a technology company based in Sunderland, visited the school and introduced Key Stage 2 students to the exciting world of artificial intelligence and related job roles.
The event also included a visit from local police officers, who brought their patrol car to the school yard, creating an unforgettable experience for younger students. Reception student Eva Nirmal, aged five, shared her excitement, saying, “It was fun. I want to be a police officer when I grow up.”
Parents from the community played a significant role in the event, sharing their own career experiences. These included paramedics, nurses, musicians, ministers, bank advisors, police sergeants, fingerprint analysts, and members of the merchant and royal navy. Their presence added a personal touch to the event and helped students understand the diverse range of jobs available in society.

Darcie Moore, a seven-year-old Year 2 pupil, expressed her interest in learning about being a special baby nurse. She said, “It was interesting seeing how the babies eat with the tube.” Such experiences can have a lasting impact on young children, helping them envision future possibilities.
Amy Hyde, the careers lead at St Gregory’s, highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “The week aimed to broaden children’s horizons, as research shows young pupils often limit their career choices based on their background and influences. At St Gregory’s, we are committed to encouraging every child to dream big and prepare for a future full of opportunities.”
She continued, “Careers week has been a fantastic opportunity to make connections with the local community. We love welcoming parents into the school. This year we had new visitors as well as repeat visitors from last year who were happy to share their career with different sets of children.”
The school encourages anyone interested in sharing their career journey with students to contact the school office. If you would like to visit St Gregory’s and talk about your own career path at any point during the school year, you can email [email protected].
