A Jacksonville bank sustained significant damage after police say a driver put her foot on the accelerator instead of the brake and drove into the business.
The driver, 89-year-old Joyce M. Vortman of Jacksonville, told police she was parking in the lot at CNB Bank & Trust, 1211 W. Morton Ave., about 2:16 p.m. Monday. She intended to slow down for another vehicle in the lot, but pressed on the accelerator, drove over a sidewalk, and went into the southeast corner of the building, according to a police report.
A man who was working on landscaping at the bank said he had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, according to police. He was taken to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital for treatment of pain in his ribs, police said.
Several large glass windows, bushes and the exterior wall sustained major damage, according to police.
Vortman was not injured, police said, and was not cited in the crash. Her car had to be towed because of disabling damage to its front end.
