A New Era of Collaboration Between the Canary Islands and Morocco
The Canary Islands and Morocco have taken a significant step forward in fostering scientific and technological collaboration by announcing their first joint call for research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) project funding. This initiative is expected to launch by the end of 2025 and will be co-funded by the Government of the Canary Islands and the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). The program aims to support collaborative projects led by researchers from both regions, with oversight from their respective universities.
The announcement was made during an official ceremony that brought together key figures from both sides. Attendees included Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo, the presidents of the Universities of Las Palmas and La Laguna, UM6P President Hicham El Habti, and Higher Education Advisor Migdalia MachÃn. A formal agreement was signed to establish the technical and organizational framework for this groundbreaking initiative.
Strengthening Ties Through Science
Clavijo emphasized the importance of this project in deepening the relationship between the Canary Islands and Morocco. He described it as a vital step toward building a shared “scientific community” capable of addressing global challenges. The initiative focuses on key areas such as energy, water, food security, and health, which are critical for sustainable development in both regions.
El Habti, the president of UM6P, highlighted the role of scientific cooperation in tackling common issues like climate change and agricultural resilience. He pointed out that joint research projects and student exchanges serve as a model of “science diplomacy,” promoting mutual understanding and long-term partnerships.
Expanding Opportunities for Researchers
This new initiative is also designed to provide Moroccan and Canary researchers with access to additional funding opportunities. These include programs from the Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) in North Africa. By leveraging these resources, the project aims to strengthen the role of universities in generating innovative solutions through cross-border collaboration.
The effort builds on the momentum of the “Africa Canarias Challenge,” a program that supports entrepreneurship and innovation across Africa, including in Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal. This existing framework has already laid the groundwork for increased collaboration between the Canary Islands and African nations.
A New Student Exchange Program
During the event, another important development was announced: a new student exchange program between the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) and UM6P. As part of this initiative, four Moroccan students will complete professional internships this summer at institutions across the Canary Islands. This program not only fosters academic and professional growth but also strengthens cultural and intellectual ties between the two regions.
Looking Ahead
The joint R&D&I initiative represents a major milestone in the relationship between the Canary Islands and Morocco. It reflects a shared commitment to using science and technology as tools for addressing global challenges and driving sustainable development. With continued collaboration, this partnership has the potential to become a model for international cooperation in research and innovation.
